Question re: Installing window in CT door

Postby willfish4fud » Thu Jul 24, 2014 11:56 am

Im curious as to the typical construction inside of a CT door. I need a window in my door and am wondering what you typically find when you open it up and therefore what it will take to do it. Thanks

My door is foam with aluminum skin on either side. A sabre saw with a medium blade cut it like butter. Here's a pic of the hole before window installation.

Thanks for that. Exactly what I was wondering about. Mine is skinned with wood on inside but am thinking it could be same inside. Unless its hollow/partially hollow???

Also interested in the results. Mine is also wood on the inside, outside skinned with aluminum and the hinges are the big heavy duty strap hinges.

Mine was wood but partially hollow. Use a sabre saw with a fine blade. I didn't have my sabre saw so used a sawzall which made too rough a cut. Also if you door is partially hollow, insert wood or foam to provide a "solid" area of cutting, prevents the metal side from bending in........don't ask me how I know :shock:

willfish4fud, Howdy;

I ordered an RV door for mine and the door that came with it is foam core.

Just FYI the service guy at the dealer told me that Styrofoam core is pretty much the standard these days and the only thing to watch out for regarding structural members is near the door lock

Mine are solid plywood. Unfortunately they are made up of two pieces instead of one....not real happy about that.

My door had a metal frame and was hollow on the inside. I ended up lining it with foam.

Shoddy work. I agree. Two pieces of plywood stapled together.
