Cargo Trailer Conversion Campout/Meet and Greet?

Converting Cargo Trailers into TTTs

"Neighbor" Mike:

Late summer could work for us.

I just started my CT build. Need windows, hopefully get them tomorrow, then I can insulate, etc. Going to keep it simple to start, then take a road trip to see how the "basics" work. Then return to Vanc. Island and finish the conversion over the warmer summer months. Come late summer head out again. Flaming Gorge sounds like a great place to head for! :D

Hate to leave out the eastern folk, but US (and Canada) is a very large area. Even though it would be fun to all get together in one place, it'll probably be nigh on impossible. :(

Just my 2cents.

I did some quick "what if" scenarios for making the trip to the Gorge in Utah, down to Quartzsite and back to VA. For me that is 2000 mi. to Utah, 800 down to Quartzsite and another 2300 back to VA. Long ? Yes. Cost? $1000 plus in gas. All not counting side trips.

Could we do it? Yes. Do,we want to? Yes.. So now,all the planning and discussing work is necessary.

What really makes this something we want to do is shown in this website.

Jon Weinburg and his wife, Lyn, did a MA To CA trip and documented it here in many photos. While their trip was one way and followed a much more northern route, it, just shows that there are dozens, no make that gazillion sights out there that remain to be seen...at least for folks like us

I grew up and have family in northern Virginia. I've made the drive across the USA no less than five times (maybe six?). It's a trip that never gets old (okay parts of it get old). I plan to do it again sometime. Sure gas is a huge expense and so is the time off work for some of us. if you make it an adventure road trip, why not.

There's tons of places in the west we could consider for a group campout. Any other votes, suggestions?

Just across the bridge at Louisville is the farthest I have been west. This is not counting the business trips made to McAllen, TX. So yes, everything beyond that would be a treat for me. And it also makes me the least qualified to suggest a good location out there.

Oh, I could think of a few more just off hand, and a bunch more if I really thought about it. Just depends on what folks are looking for, convenient travel routes to other destinations on the same trip, time of year, length of stay, etc. Its really hard to go wrong anywhere in the central Rockies. Parks, Forests, and wide open spaces. The "season" is June to September for the most part though. Early October if you have heat and aren't afraid of a little snow. Cindy (Rainier70) knows Idaho and the surrounding area like the back of her hand and could chime in too.

I would envision someplace where a bunch of us were parked fairly close together rather than spread out over a few miles. Perhaps even a group campground that could be reserved. That, of course, would mean pay sites. There's off-grid places where we could gather, but no amenities if some wanted those. I'm usually more the loner type, but to meet and see the others on here, I'd work on a few options if I had an idea of how many might show up. Matching everybody's schedules is the big project. Finding a place is much easier once the time and general area is chosen.

I think it would be really hard to do a single national/international campout. I would shoot for several regional ones, and who can make it makes it. I also think that combined or in the same area and time frame with the tear droppers and tiny trailer crews would be nice. The Pinedale, Wyoming one looks like it is in an area that would have room for some more campers.

I can suggest free areas in the high mountains, but they are usually single camper or at most a few campers together. I know very little about the organized regular campgrounds with amenities, especial the large group areas.

I can't camp near other campers (smoke) so I avoid all campgrounds and most popular locations other than to pick up water if I need it. Once in awhile in the shoulder seasons I can camp at the small campgrounds if no one else is there.

I can't camp at a gathering so take my thoughts for what they are worth....which is ...nothing. Wish I could, but the best I could do is to probably drop in mid-day for a quick howdy.

That's a great idea to combine forces with an existing groups' campout, such as the tear droppers. We'll have to sneak over to that side of the forum and see what they're up to.

I'm comfortable camping in both remote locations or in established camp grounds. The primary advantage of an established campground is the amenities like electric, water, and showers. A disadvantage is the cost and space constraints.

More to come.

What about a Midwest meeting? Somewhere along the Mississippi River. I would love to camp in Arizona or Wyoming, but it's quite a distance when your employer lets you only take a week of vacation at a time.

I'm attending "http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=61481" aka Cooler Near the Lake in April 2015. Last year we had 2-3 cargo trailers mixed in with teardrops. Everyone is welcome. If your cargo trailer is ready, come to the shores of Lake Michigan in Wisconsin and join the fun.

Take a look at last years event #8 viewtopic.php?f=1&t=57806

I will add it to my calendar and see how things have progressed by the end of March.

Mike S wrote:Hey all,

I'm a new poster but I've been lurking for several years. I was wondering if anyone on this forum has planned a CTC specific camp-out. My wife and I were talking about how much fun it would be to get together with other folks (lunatics?) that have nothing better to do than build CTCs. Seriously I'd love to see your CTC's in person. Has something like this happened and if not, would there be any interest in it?

Hi Mike S,
I started my build in Arizona and have since moved to Minnesota, and am still making changes and finishing things in my 6x10 CT conversion ... it was built for camping and has close to 60K on it. Take a look at my gallery pics (the link is at the bottom of this post) ... New bunks ordered and should be here tomorrow; I will need to make my own hinges for a Murphy-like side install and the galley overhead cabinet needs to go in before the summer gets here...

As far as who and what is going on in the camping world (no pun intended) log in and sign in to the TearJerkers site. A lot of the CTC owners are aslo members to that site and welcome CT's and small trailers ... They only have one rule that I am aware of LOVE TO CAMP ... http://www.tearjerkers.net/new_forum/index.php
Happy Camping & Building,
John (JC)
