Here are some tips:
I measured from center to center on my side view mirrors and added one inch. That number became the width for my Weekender-XL. Also, determine the tow rating for your vehicle. Brakes is the key= you must be able to stop. If you already have a hitch, you could rent a small U-haul and load it up to the maximum you think you will be towing. Take it for a spin and see how the car performs and how well you can stop.
Good luck finding the style you want to build. I went with a camper with straight lines as I wasn't confident about building one with curves.
