Air Cond *and* ceiling vent?

Good morning all.....

I opted to do an air conditioner in my Jewel Box, but when setting the spars I still plan on bracing 14x14 for a fantastic or generic vent fan, either for in the future if I take the a/c out or whatever. The a/c will be on the interior cabinet and on the left side, with a vent out to the side.

Question: Even with the a/c and windows on either side, would you or have you put some kind of manual vent opening or such in the roof? or do you just use the vent option on the a/c ? or when no elec hookup - use a 12v or elec small fan to help create the circulation?

If you're planning ahead make sure you run some wires for the fan also.

Jewel, don't you want one up top for the additional light it can let in too? I put in one of these cheap hand-crank jobs:

Julie, remember to frame 14.25x14.25 for the vent opening or ya just might have trouble installing it...run some wires into that area for a fan latter if wanted and be sure the framing is at least an inch and a half, so you have something to screw into...
...you can use the A/C "fresh air" option(if it has one) along with an open window for fresh air ventilation...I like the Fantastic vent with a smoked dome for some additional light however it is expensive...a regular cheapie vent and the O2Cool 12v fan that has been talked about elsewhere are certainly viable options.....

Julie, you have to put in a vent. The amount of ventilation it provides will allow you to be in the camper without the A/C or even the A/C fan running more often than without. It lets in light, exhaust air and makes it all seem a whole lot bigger inside. Just put in a cheap hand crank as was suggested but wire in case you want a powered vent later on.

Julie I put in both. I'll use the A/C during the day. at night it's usually cool so we will be just open windows with the vent open. Being on top the heat will go there.

Most cheap a/c units no longer exchange inside/outside air. They simply recirculate the same old interior air which becomes more stale as the hours pass.... I leave both door windows open about 1 inch to get some air exchange...

I have both, but not this weekend. I haven't got around to cutting the hole for the fantastic fan. I'll use the fan on 12V and the a/c unit when shore power is available.

I have both also. My vent is not a roof vent, though. I used a bathroom vent mounted under the floor of the tear. It draws air in above the cabinates behind the galley and exhausts it under the trailer. When the A/C is on I turn off the vent so the poket of hot air near the cieling can vent out the same holes the bathroom vent uses to draw fresh air in. I went camping a couple of times without the vents above the cabinates and found it uncomfortable for my son in his cot even with the A/C going. He was stuck in a pocket warm air above the windows. The vents i installed above the cabinates in the wall allowed the hot air to naturally escape and be replaced by cool dry air.

As a matter of fact, I went out running errands and went to the Mobile Mart (mostly mobile home stuff, but rv stuff too) and found the $24
hand-crank-open vent with the cover, and luckily they had one cream color interior 'ring' which will blend in with my planned interior.

I had already planned on wiring the 12v there in case me (or someone in the future) decides to install a Fantastic fan, etc.

Both here too. My cheap A/C doesn't exchange air, it just cools it. Besides, When it isn't hot enough for the A/C, I want the fan to draw in or blow out air, so I have the Fantastic 5000RBT that reverses, in or out. There's nothing like having cool air drawn in the windows at night by an exhaust fan, whether it is in the ceiling or the wall. Even if you don't put one in now, leave youself the option. Put in framing and wiring to hook one up later.
