I agree...Think Light!
The weight creeps up on you very quickly.
I know this because both my teardrops are "All Steel"
And by the way....if your official build is not starting until May 6th..What are you doing over the next month???

Ah, weight. Right, exactly. I have an unshakeable tendency to overbuild. You all need to slow my roll before I do build a tank.
Okay, so maybe they don't all go into this project, but they'll find a home somewhere.

Pillow lights, nice idea. I also have an image of a whole little forest of flashers and running lights sticking out somewhere. I'm not worrying about that level of detail yet, though..

Here's my question for the day: I'm trailer shopping, and pretty much everything is in the 800 to 1000 range for 5x10s. A couple down around 700 got snapped up or were too far away. I'm looking at a nice, nearly-new Big Tex 5x10 that is listed at 1300 but I hope to get down to 900 or so before I'd even think about it. But in general, what do people pay for these trailers? (again, if I had a year of lead time, I'd just poke around until I got a free one, but those leads aren't going to present themselves in the time I have. I hate moving fast, but I'm allowing myself this rush so that I can slow way way down after I take off..). Here's the posting: http://newhaven.craigslist.org/hvo/4941387471.html
The big luxury is not having to drive 3 hrs out and back like some of the others... What do people think? I don't have time for a restoration, so I'm willing to pay for something that I know will work

In the next month? I'm scrounging for parts. I'm a professional knife sharpener and I scheduled a bunch of gigs to finance this. I got hooked up with a marine ply supplier so I'm driving to Boston to get some slightly imperfect stuff at deep discount. I'm finishing school and studying with a Grade A machinist I've recently had the good fortune to run into. Walking the dog in the park (that's her, getting a hamburger, in my avatar), and etc. A welding job in Maine at the end of April. on and on. Mostly scheming about this, though...

More soon, and thanks

Dear tnttt

can anyone advise me about a logistics point of getting a trailer home tomorrow? I've found a good one for a good price in New Jersey, so I'm making the trip tomorrow afternoon. The PO is not willing to let me drive home with his plates still on the trailer. I think this is what I did the last time I bought a trailer, as well as when I bought my motorcycle off CL.

This is a dumb question, then, but how do people get their trailers home? I can't find guidance online. Can I just put my rear plate onto the trailer and scoot by?

thanks, more soon

Hi,

here's an update from another day of material sleuthing

A friend referred me to Boulter Plywood in Sommerville, MA. I hate driving in Boston, but this was a worthwhile trip. Chris Boulter is a fine human, and sits on a mountain of fine plywood... I sharpened a bunch of knives for guys in the shop and he gave me a deal and even threw in a few damaged sheets for free. A beautiful shop full to the brim with basically every shape and thickness wooden sheet good you could imagine. Here's their website: http://www.boulterplywood.com/

A great resource, especially for anyone in the Northeast.

Call up the PA DMV and ask if you can get a temporary tag/license plate to get your trailer home. OR, Check with the Maine DMV to see if you can pick up license plates now.
I understand that Maine is really easy to get licensed by. Some people in PA go through Maine because it is easier than PA.

My word, I've got craigslist exhaustion. After three false starts I finally found a fair deal on a solid trailer sold by a good guy who lives nearby. Hard to get all four together. But Glen set me up and was excited to hear about the future life of his trailer.

A 5x10 trailer in great shape. I forgot to bring a camera and have left it stashed at a friend's house, but I'll put up pictures as soon as I move it to its new home. It's got 18" heavy rails and a drop tail. I'll cut it all off and give the tailgate to my dad as a grill. That will lighten the load by 200 pounds I guess (heavy steel all over!).

S.Heisley, thanks for the advice. I'm going to either get it registered in New York or Maine, whichever is easier. Too much running around!

Harper,

NY reg was no problem. The form is on line for you to fill out,http://dmv.ny.gov/forms/mv82.pdf. The bill of sale and a couple pictures of the trailer's lights and the vin stamp. Its under 1000 lbs so about the same... Cost for me was under $30 at the local DMV.

When I bought my trailer it hadn't been registered yet. I pulled it across three states with my fingers crossed. I had the Bill of Sale to prove I just bought it, I assume there is some sort of grace period.

I believe they are called "temporary registrations".

My guess is you didn't get the title and/or bill of sale until you picked up the trailer. So there is no way you could have registered it ahead of time without those documents. I'm sure all states give you so many days to register a newly purchased vehicle. Obviously the sooner you get it registered the less likely you are to be stopped. You don't want to put a plate from another trailer on just to make it look like it is registered, because that would be improper registration.

Temp registration is spot on, KCSudley.

You can get them with completed bill of sale. Just looked at getting one in Indiana to pull trailer back to Ohio. Didn't need to in the end but found that one doesn't need to be a resident to purchase one.

Harper,

I find it difficult to see your pictures in the time motion work. Perhaps you can reprogram the work
to hold the shots for 2 to 3 times as long.

Thanks,
