Awning C-channel suppliers?

Postby Hennesseystealth » Sat May 23, 2015 4:50 pm

After spending last weekend at the Pismo Classic Camper Rally, I have decided to add a fabric awning to the door side of my teardrop. I found a supplier for the fabric that isn't a rip off but need to find a source for the c-channel. I can order online from Vintage Trailer, but by the time you add a shipping tube and shipping, it gets a bit expensive. Does anyone know of any camper retail outlets in Northern California that would stock the part?

Since my teardrop is over 6' tall, I figure this is a better choice than hauling around a pop up canopy.

Any RV parts store will have it. I don't know of anywhere you'll be able to get it for free.

Free is always great, but never an expectation. I'll check around but there aren't a lot of RV stores around here...maybe Sky River.

Yes, over 6' tall. Sidewalls were constructed using 5x10 plywood and the trailer frame sits about 15" off the ground. So, about 75" ground to top of roof. I guess I am stretching the truth calling it a teardrop, but that was the starting point before I put my CAD program into hyperdrive.

Awning rail is what you want. You might check with Marti of Marti's Awnings. She might know of someone up north that carries it.

As I remember this is who I got ours from http://www.csctextiles.com/jef_04awn-01.htm
We have it on three sides of the trailer and it is attached with 3M VHB tape.

Then all you have to do is figure out how to attach the PVC to the trailer in a way that it dosent look like ________. Maybe Miller also knows how to do that.

If you aren't against screws you can countersink them thru the slot cut in PVC. Using stainless of course you can use maybe 1/2 inc just use a small enough cord

One question. Have you done this? If not, you need to think about what your saying to do. Better yet, do a sample piece yourself just the way you say to do it and then get back to us on the results. Remember for an awning rail to work properly, the slot can only be 1/8 to 3/16 wide.

I did it with 3/4pvc, so slot had to be cut wider than I needed because it flexes shut if you understand so it ended at about the 1/8 you are talking about, it also depends on the fabric, we were using canvas. Which you or I wouldn't do on a TD,

Be careful pushing that PVC thru the saw. If you push too fast it goes "ka-boom" and shatters. Also, that same internal stress that pinches it closed will tend to clamp on the back side of the blade which can cause kick back.

I'm with Gage on this one for sure. Not worth faffing about with the PVC, just spring for the proper stuff, sail track or the awning strip. It'll work out much better in the long run (excuse the pun)
