Mattress help

Postby Hennesseystealth » Sun Aug 30, 2015 9:28 pm

In order to stick with standard aluminum sizes, I built my camper on a 5x10 trailer with the plywood inset in the trailer (60" outside). That gives me just about 58" for a mattress width and a good 80" for length. Unfortunately, a queen air mattress wants to push out the door opening and puts significant pressure on the door when closed. A full size mattress is too short (I'm almost 6'5").

So, I am looking at making a foam mattress and could use some help with material selection and thickness.

Thanks.

I just received a 2" memory foam mattress from these folks, it is 80" long and fit my bed perfectly. It is 54" wide so less than the 58" you seek.

I put it on top of a 4" regular foam mattress and it really improves the comfort of the bed.

I've bought from the Foam Factory twice now. 5" of foam with a 2" memory foam topper. Can't be beat. A lot better than an air mattress. I build the same dimensions and find a 60" wide queen mattress fits inside just fine.

I have gone with Walmart on line for a memory foam mattress twice. A 8 inch graduated density mattress is just over $200 and sleeps better than the $1000
mattress we have in the house

The final thickness of your mattress should allow full movement of your feet to any cabinet or other obstacle above them.

Great customer service and fair prices.

We have medium density foam custom cut for Miss Piggy (three piece as we have under bed storage) with a foam topper.
And yes, it is more comfortable than our expensive bed at home.
One imp0rtant thing to remember thought is to have the foam cut an inch smaller to allow room for the blankets to go down the sides, so you can make the bed without scraping your knuckles off.

so, for my tear, 58" wide interior, I did this

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Spa-Sensation ... es/4569413

Its quite comfy, but when I am laying on it just right, I do bottom out the foam.

6" of foam would be nicer. If I had it to do over again I would have sprung the extra for this

I have the mattress cut to fit tight since we use a fitted sheet on the bottom and two sleeping bags on top.
Trying to tuck in sheets and blankets on a traditional teardrop can be a pain.
Having a gap along the wall will be a crud catcher since camping isn't like being at home.

Ive designed mine to be the same.
I plan on using a fitted sheet over a materess protector and the last thing i want is it coming off easily.
I only ever sleep with a quilt anyway so it dosnt get tucked in and its far easier to make!

My mattress is in three custom made covered pcs that fit snug to the walls at all four sides. I then just throw a sleeping bag on top, three pcs make it easy to remove/replace and handling in and out the door for cleaning.
Works for me! :D

We too have three custom made pieces plus topper(also cut into three pieces) wrapped into zippered liners (pieces above our storage doors are hinged by the ticking).
These are covered by fitted sheets (to match Miss Piggy) that have extra elastics sewn across the bottoms so the can't pop off.
When spring camping we use a 12v electric mattress warmer (for 5 to 10 minutes before we go to bed) covered by a polar fleece blanket (tucked down the sides...fills the entire bed space ).then we have our top sheet (also tucked in) and our camping comforter.
Summer: not mattress warmer or fleece....just top sheet and light comforter.
Sleep like babies (have exceeded 12 hours without waking up a couple of times) ;)
At Gathering we have awakened to empty campgrounds on the final day
But, the only thing that seems to interrupt great sleeps while Teardrop camping is the amount of  :wine: consumed before retiring.

I can second the walmart memory foam mattress I think one of the brands is called the 'spa mattress' Anyway a 6-8" is very comfortable. If you need to cut it down to size there are many ways but the absolute best is with an electric carving knife. The sliding saw action of the two blades makes a clean cut with no squashing or jaggedness.
Conform and be dull.

Second hand store for a $2.00 used electric carving knife with a shot or two of silicone spray and it like cutting though butter. Lay out on your wood deck, draw you line with a felt pen on top then line it up nice and straight with one of you deck slits/gaps below which will help keep it nice and square with the line above and CUT!! came out nice !!!

Or just sharpen up a kitchen knife properly. Felt like going through butter to me.

What's wrong with a full size ? (54 x75) gives you 2 inches each side to make the bed!

You can use ALL of the mattress without fear of falling out of bed so a full vs a queen is all but a mute point.
Growing older but not up !
