Geared Hatch Hinge

Postby Alan_H » Tue Nov 03, 2015 12:54 pm

Hi,

I saw on a build thread a geared hatch hinge that someone got from SoCalTeardrops. I can't find the thread now, but I inquired with SoCal and they say they don't sell it.

I have found this style hinge online for vertical doors, but not for a horizontal application. The pic that this member showed had end caps that slid into the joint cap to keep it from sliding off.

Does anyone have a source for this hinge?

The RV Teardrop Camper Trailer 6 foot Hurricane Hinge with Rain Gutter from TCTeardops ebay store looks like a good choice. The built-in rain gutter, unique to their hurricane hinge, makes it stand out. They are available in several lengths.

This is the newest HURRICANE HINGE on the market!!! It also out performs the standard Hurricane Hinge without the rain gutter. As you will see it has a Rain Gutter built in on the body side to prevent water leaking through the hinge when the Galley door is open and raining outside. Go to our FaceBook page Teardrop Trailer Parts for a video or contact us through TCTeardrops LLC. We offer FREE SHIPPING in the lower 48 States but if you are looking for International sales contacts us for a shipping quote If you are from Wisconsin you will be charged 5.5% tax.

I have used the gear hinge 3 times, for a hatch and once for the doors. I won't use it for doors again as it can let the door sag down a little . The is a set screw in an inset that keeps the hinge in place so the door does not slide down. Once it is set and adjusted right it stays put. But early on it was a struggle to figure out why my doors would pop open.

As for the galley hinge, I work alone. So installing this hinge by myself was very easy. But 2 of the 3 hinges had leaking problems. When I reported this the SO. Cal where I bought the hinge they insisted that it is impossible for it to leak. I sent pictures and they basically dismissed me. I did figure out how to fix the problem but it was a big hassle. My best advise if you want to use this hinge, is to be sure that both sides of your framing are dead flat against each other before installing the hinge.

If you purchase from SO. Cal expect to be on your own if you have issues.

Here is an alternate source. They do not sell to the public I believe. But any cabinet shop should be able to get it for you.

This is verry similar to the one i got but those slots in the hinge where the keepers go looked like they would be nothing but troble water wise.
Is this where yours leaked?

I was thinking about installing one on my hatch but would like to see some more input and pictures of installs. I know there are many variations but are also available through most commercial door companies.

The water came through the gears and leaked between the 2 legs of the hinge. There was only a spot about 1 foot long that leaked and only with real heavy rain.

@Woodbutcher I think it was in one of your build threads that I saw this hinge. Thanks for responding. I liked the idea that it can be assembled by one person, as I too will be working alone. Maybe your issues is why SoCal said that the don't sell them anymore.
