Florida Folk Festival

Postby Ira » Thu Jun 08, 2006 7:53 am

If anyone wants to plan early and get away from the cold and snow of February and head down to Florida, check this out:

http://www.southfloridafolkfest.com/info.htm

Woody, have you ever been to this one? (He and I are both familiar with the park.)

And I KNOW that I'll be finished by February!

Markham park. yes very familiar with the park. Have not been to the folk festival when there. Zeta fest however, well totally different story
Ira when are we going camping anyway? If you get done by feb. you can go to Little Talbot by Jacksonville or if you get done earlier maybe Anastatia by St Augustine in November

Anastasia looks like a definite for me. (I've never even been to St. Augustine!) Heck, if I'm not 100%, and I mean 100% done by the end of August, I don't deserve to OWN this thing. That'll be like 15 months!

I emailed the guy at the folk festival whether there were certain sites that were closer to the festival action. I don't know if that's a good or a BAD thing, but I thought I would ask.

Nice clip Matt

Ira,

You will like Anastasia, Saturday mornings there is a farmers/craft market, that has live music in the Anastasia Amphitheater parking lot. The lighthouse is just a few blocks away, and it is always fun to take a walk downtown in the oldest city in the US. I will definitely be there this year. Can't wait. Is the South Florida Folk Fest packed with snowbirds? I usually try to stay away from down south in February, didn't know you could find a campsite anywhere down there that time of year. If you ever want to go to a really bizarre state park, the Koreshan Park is pretty unusual. It is over on the West side of the state on US 41 in Estero, Fl. It is a beautiful place and is really like "old Florida" ..With a weird twist... Here's a link. Koreshan link

Steve, I don't think the Folk Festival is a snowbird thing:

You think old Jews from New York like that kind of music?

It's a very nice, large county park with modern facilities, but as a Floridian yourself, if you're not going for the music, I don't know if it's worth the trip to visit THIS part of Florida.

As you know, if it was the Keys, I would say go in a heartbeat. But this is a county park nestled within the urban sprawl of South Florida. So I say if you want to shlep down for the music, that should be worth it. As far as the nature goes, I don't know. Maybe I'm just spoiled because I live down here.

And I just checked that link of yours, but what am I missing? What makes the park so weird?

Little Talbot??? Anastasia???
Where's the info on Florida gatherings/camping this fall, winter and next spring? I looked in Destinations and the Calendar and didn't see Anastasia or Little Talbot listed. I'm definitely interested in both. Has anyone started planning another Keys gathering?

In the main threads list, under "Camping and Gathering," go to Southeast. Woody posts the announcements there.

If this is hijacking, I apologize in advance.

I found that site fascinating, especially looking at the covers of the mags from the 30s and 40s. I remember when I was about 8-10 years old (1947-1949), visiting my grandfather. In the room where I slept, over his workshop, he had boxes of PM and PS mags from the 30s under the bed. I'd get them out and pour through them looking at the "New" inventions that never saw production, and wonder what happened to them. I saw an article on a unique electric engine they referred to at the "Wankle Electric" engine that looked very promising to deliver twice the horsepower of a standard electric. It never was produced. Why? Did some oil company buy and bury the patent?

I read a SF story back in the 50s about that happening. An inventor came up with a replacement for gasoline that cost practically nothing to produce. An oil company bought the patent. He invented a source of electricity that was much cheaper to produce than using coal or oil and a power company bought the patent. Then, he invented a rocket engine capable of reaching outer space and a mysterious person bought that patent. When he tried to cash that check, he couldn't. It was drafted on the Bank of Mars (insert 8 bars from the Twilight Zone theme here).
