Coleman Keepers Campfire come on in!

Lanterns, stoves, etc... anything old!

I think you did pretty good on that lantern if you have the welding stuff to put the bail back on. Probably not a real big job if you have done it before. Or what ever method you use. The safe and what was inside looks to be in very good shape. Two years ago I bought a 425E for $1.50. It looked a bit rough and the lid was off the hinges. Just had to bend a few things back into shape for the lid. Do a little cleaning to my low tastes and it fired right up with the fuel that was in the tank. Oh, had to replace the gasket of course. Inside of the tank was very good and the stove worked just fine. It is now in my trailer and has made two trips to Burning Man.

Nice start to a collection. They both look clean and very use able.

Thanks guys. I'll probably drill out small holes where the tacks were and put a new tack with my flux wire welder. Hopefully I can turn it down enough to not blow through immediately. The pump piston leather on the lantern was dry and not functional. I dipped it in oil but it wasn't enough at that moment. Maybe I just need to give it time to soak in and swell back up.

The collection has grown already.. I initially had contacted two sellers on CL expecting one or none to get back with me. I normally don't do that, but then it normally takes weeks for me to actually find someone who will respond or hasn't already sold. Well, Lucky me, the second seller got back with me too :?. So I went ahead with it and picked up a 290 lantern and another 425E for $25 total. They have seen more use but are still functional. I was thinking of getting a second lantern anyway and apparently this one is one of the first truly adjustable ones? In that case it might work out well for the table while the 228 would handle kitchen duties or other general area lighting. The second stove I plan to give to a family member who car camps.

I have been able to get dry leathers to work by flexing them a bunch with my fingers. Have not lost one yet. Only leathers I have replaced was in a 1927 lantern. I have several that have a little nick out of them but they still work. At least still work as in an emergency. Something a neoprene cup would not do.

I welded the vertical back on (not the prettiest repair but it's no show piece), burned some mantles, massaged the now oil-soaked leather enough to build pressure, pumped and it fired up! I fired up the stove last week and it's functioning well also. Now to focus on the 290...

Here is my 427 "Peter Pump", June 1926. Almost 90 years old.

Image

I got it almost a year ago and just today got it running. It did not have a globe so I put the old crusty mica globe from a L227 I have in it. Pump does not work to well. Probably needs a new leather. Has an R55 generator in it but just need to hold a couple of matches next to it to get it hot enough to make gas and fire up with out much problem. It is not dented up much at all and would probably look real good if I was one to polish. I just like to run them.

Kitty likes it when I burn a lantern on a winter's night. She curls right up next to them.

Smart cat. We had a fire in the fireplace tonight... something we seldom do because it sucks the heat out of the house, and haven't done for a couple of years... and the twins, our dumb formally feral kittens who are now getting big enough to call cats, were acting all afraid and weirded out by it.

Nice lantern, too.

It has been kind of cold here but really it is much closer to what we normally get than the past 3 years. Have some snow down here on the Snake River Plain but not bad. I here our Idaho mountains is getting a pretty good snow pack so things are looking up there.

I have been thinking the same thing. I'm sure he is just distracted by the latest hobby or interest.
