so I obtained a slat system from Ikea, two of them, on top of which is a layer of those children's playmat things that snap together.
Then on top of that is a simple, inexpensive 4" memory foam topper on sale from Amazon.
The slats are sort of springy so when you aren't laying on the mattress it sits up allowing air to circulate. The foam playmat things are dense foam so your elbow, hip bones or knees don't bottom out and the memory foam sure seems like enough...its a firm sleep but very comfortable for me and my much lighter wife.
That was my first stab at it and so far it looks like I got it right for us.
