Mattress mistake

Postby SPLAT » Thu Mar 03, 2016 2:37 pm

Was looking at 4" mattress but they were too thin for my weight, 6" was too firm, 8" might have been comfortable but the 10" super duper mattress was only $40 more....
However, now the leg space under the cabinet is a little snug :fb

Oh well, it is REALLY COMEFORTABLE.
I'll get it right on the next build!

You could always learn how to walk like a duck... or shorten the cabinet.

we took a queen-size 1" memory foam topper, folded it in half side-to side, put it on the top half of the mattress- more padding for torso, room for feet

Aldi sells a queen memory foam mattress once a year, if you time it right you can get it marked down as low as $100. It's not thin, but it's so much better than the old air mattress!

Take an electric knife and shave the underside of the foam at the foot end. Or, like you say, start on the next build. Do you really need an excuse?

In my neck of the woods we have to think about mold and mildew.

so I obtained a slat system from Ikea, two of them, on top of which is a layer of those children's playmat things that snap together.

Then on top of that is a simple, inexpensive 4" memory foam topper on sale from Amazon.

The slats are sort of springy so when you aren't laying on the mattress it sits up allowing air to circulate. The foam playmat things are dense foam so your elbow, hip bones or knees don't bottom out and the memory foam sure seems like enough...its a firm sleep but very comfortable for me and my much lighter wife.

That was my first stab at it and so far it looks like I got it right for us.

Do you have 2 of the slats stacked?

side by side.
along with a little judicious jig saw work, eh?

They were (are?) the slat system for a juvenile bed frame they sold years ago...why I kept them so long is beyond me but as I pondered my mattress situation I had a light bulb moment.

as i said, just to allow a bit of air circulation under the mattress during our winters...that and a Driz Air unit seems to be doing the trick.
