INSURANCE

Postby Tommy B » Wed May 25, 2016 2:24 pm

Hello everybody. I am finishing up my conversion and at this point I have enough invested in this $$ wise and heart wise that I want to insure it. So at least I can buy and build another if its stolen, damaged or totaled some how. How do I determine its worth and who might offer such insurance,

Thanks!

I believe this topic has been kicked around before. But I have taken no special actions to protect, insurance wise, my investment. So for me this is a good post and I look forward also to hearing from others.

I don't remember if it is a requirement or not in Florida, but in many states it is. We use Geico and the cost of adding the trailer, with a $5,000 replacement value, plus liability when traveling is like $5 per month extra. At home it is covered by homeowners. In some states and/or insurance companies, the trailer is covered under home owners policy if a certain # of miles away from home. I know this was the case with my dad's TT, as long as it was over 50 miles away from his house. Some insurance companies will automatically cover the towed vehicle, we had a carrier at some point in the past that did this, but I don't remember who it was.

State Farm in Arizona has given a replacement value for mine of the material cost only. It costs about $10 a month. PITA to get it done, as they wanted pictures, etc. to cover it on the policy. A purchased trailer from a manufacturer would have a full cash value, but a home-build does not. Go figure.

I insured with Progressive BUT... one month later they canceled the policy. Said on review it didn't fit their product profile...Whatever that means. Was really economical too, I think it was $105 for the whole year with roadside assistance. :x

So I'm in the process of this right now on mine

I found out that in Michigan, liability insurance is attached to the vehicle, so my liability while towing is covered.

Beyond that, for comprehensive, so far I've needed to provide photos to the insurance agent, what I feel is a replacement cost, pics of the registration and title from the state, and we're about 2-3 weeks into it right now.

No idea when I will get across that finish line. This is State Farm
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

I just called Progressive and they were able to give me a quote for $15K replacement for $201 per year. I went pretty high on the value (more than it is worth) because I want to be sure to have complete coverage. Also includes roadside service and vacation coverage (up to $750) if we need to find an alternate place to stay in case of claim. Let's see if it sticks :)

Meant to report back. After providing all the requested documentation (including build photos so they could get why a utility trailer is now a camper) I got $6000 coverage agreed upon value for $63 a year.

I just got insurance on the '47 MobilGlide. State Farm, 186$ a year, 250$ deductible, total value insured $24K. I told them what I had in receipts and time into it. Remember...you are covered by your auto insurance if you do any damage to something with your trailer while you are towing, but, you are not covered if it is hit, stolen, damaged by others or nature without a specific policy for it. Take some great pics of it, and have all your time and materials figured out when you go in. It seems that many agents are unfamiliar with tears and vintage trailers, mine however has a load of them insured. Never an issue getting covered with any of mine. Doug

And....they just cancelled us. So back to the drawing board. Their reason was "body type not approved" - meaning, I suppose, home-built trailers. I'll look into one of the other companies. Oh well, I was insured during our first big trip at least :)

Covered by USAA

Postby Dusty Mark » Wed Jul 06, 2016 5:33 pm

Progressive underwrites most of USAA's trailer policies, but Progressive wouldn't touch a homebuilt camping trailer. I was bounced back to USAA and after two different 15-minute conversations, I'm covered with comp ($0 deductible), collision ($50 deductible), and high liability coverages that match my car policy for $111 every 6 months. This is based on an initial value of $11,000. Receipts weren't required, but it did help when I steered the second policy writer to my Lumberjocks page which had plenty of pictures that we discussed on the phone.

My other "coverages" are a Proven Industries lock on the coupler, security lug nuts, and a Rack'em Manufacturing Magnum wheel lock. You can only do so much, but you've got to do something...

The week I completed my woody I towed it to my Allstate agent for him to see in person. Told him I had $5K into it, and to buy one like it would be $10K. Turned out he's a boatbuilding fan and was commenting/approving of my brass and stainless fasteners, and choice of varnish. In the end , $10K replacement fire/theft/damage for a hunert-sumtin.
