Cooler if you have a half-galley

Postby justageorgiaguy » Fri Jun 10, 2016 10:34 am

If your teardrop has a half-galley (where the door starts at the counter top and not the bottom of the trailer), where do you have your cooler? Did anyone build one into the counter top? I've been debating on my design between having a full door with a pull out cooler, or trying to figure out what to do if I did a half galley. I know I can just store it in the jeep and put it on the ground, I'm just fishing for other ideas. :)

If there is room just set it on the counter. Then use one of them low cost arm-less camp chairs as a stand to set it on when cooking.

I have a small one that sits on the shelf. I am only out 1 or 2 days usually so don't need much. I have it set on its side like a mini fridge that uses ice.
You can see it to the right, the little white spot.

My teardrop galley is full height, but has no room for a cooler, so I carry both (one for food and one for beverages) in the pickup truck and put them on side table next to the trailer galley when I set up.

My galley countertop is in two pieces that slide over each other with storage beneath. That's where I keep the coolers, propane stove, coffee pot, and other camping gear. After I take the coolers out, they stay outside or store in the TV at night.

There is lots of variations on how to do it for sure. Teardrops are all personal preference and the Galley is where most variation occurs. We have chartered several sailboats over the years and the cooler is commonly built into the counter top with a removable panel to get at the contents. It is effective and efficient in some ways, but at the same time very inconvenient to have to clear the counter to get into the cooler.

I used to camp in a full size GMC van and had tons of space but loading and unloading the camp stove, cooler, food box etc. drove me nuts. The teardrop kitchen can be so much easier to use. But counter space is at an absolute premium so plan carefully. I would (did) go with a fully hatch and a slide out cooler. But as I said - it is all about what you want to design and build.
Cheers,
Don

Our galley is a bit strange and definitely unconventional. It rides under our bed frame. It takes less than 5 minutes to pull out and fully setup, including all water and propane hookups. About the same amount of time to put away. It sits under a shelter or has the ability to have a quick cover put over it. It gives us 11 linear feet of countertop and 13 cu ft of storage. The door access is water tight, so we don't have to worry about the potential of a hatch leak. It rides on roller bearings mounted on aluminum rails. The supports are aluminum tripod legs from an old tripod I had. The hot water heater rides in the compartment on the street side and attaches to the back of the stove side cabinet. It is essentially 2 boy scout camp kitchens with flip overs and hinged together. There is a thin plywood piece that slides in behind the cabinets when pulled out and seals the compartment. The door is fully sealed and angles down so water can't get into the camper. We have a fridge inside and also carry a cooler.

Rather than play with ice or its derivatives I use a Waeco 42litre fridge carried in the back of the wagon and setup on a stand near the galley while camped. Plugged in to the onboard battery with the solar panel out and working. Pays that there are no bears here
Just do whatever you want its your build and you're going to be the one using it.
