water proofing your wood

Rusty , we used to be able to find gallons of Cheap polyurethane varnish ( I think it was for floors ) for under 20 bucks ... It was the kind that was thick and yellowish and dried “sticky” ... That worked great because the Mineral Spirits semed to help it dry better ... best thing is, it was CHEAP and allowed you to make a whole bunch of The Mix to really slobber on EVERYWHERE , " and of course the edges get special attention. “ ...
We have used the more common Minwax poly , and it works Great but is a bit Pricy for our intentions and is somewhat “thin" out the can ... JMHO

Thanks, How much paint thinner and how much poly should I need for my base 116"x76" ? I plan to coat it enough to the point It will no longer adsorb the liquid. Also do I coat the top and bottom. Or just the bottom of my plywood floor material ?

It goes pretty far ( sorry , we are unable to provide an exact figure ) , and you want to coat everything ... it’s cheap insurance ...

Buy one gallon of each at a time... unless you live very far away from the store, then buy two the first time.

You won't go thru it that fast, but you will go thru plenty of it.

I found a few half empty cans of Min Wax poly oil base in the basement. About 1/2 gallon of poly. We'll see how far that's goes before I buy more.

1/2 gallon of poly and 1 1/2 gal Min Spirits will make 2 gallons of the mix ... oil based poly is what you want ...

Also, what should I used to fill the screw holes? And should I apply "the mix" before or after filling the screw holes?

J’ I’d think whatever is cheaper , and oil based .... Interior means it doesn’t have any UV additives for outside use , thing is , it will be working for you Inside the wood ... I would think screw holes should be pre drilled and painted with the mix to get down into the threads, and we always use beeswax to coat the screw before inserting ... Helps the screw go in and adds a bit more waterproofing ... “ sealing “ wax so to speak ...

In our legendary Humidity, if we forget a step it always comes back later on to bite us in the woodworking dept. ...

Aproximently how may coats of the mix (25/75) did you apply , To get the plywood to stop adsorbing more liquid ? I plan to start applying the mix within a few days. Also does a cold work area affect the drying time ? Winter's back in Ohio.

Till the plywood stops adsorbing the mix ... just a few coats usually does it ... and it dries quick in between ... Cold weather may affect the drying , best read the label on the can ...

Started to apply the MIX today , it sure is thin. The plywood soaked up the first coat in no time. Should be able to put on a second coat turkey day in the morning.

Paint it till it won’t soak up any more ... if it won’t take any more poly , it won't soak up any water either... ever

Earlier in this thread there was speculation about plywood having water resistant glue that solvent based preservatives could dissolve. Specifically Luan. Has that been debunked?
