Spare tire

Where did you mount your spare tire, one of the thing's I overlooked in the build process.

I am playing with that too, on my new build. on my old trailer I carried it inside the front bonnet. On trailer wait should be more to the front or needed to counter your galley in the back.
One man build a cage under the frame and put a lock on the side so if he needed it, it was out of the way and yet handy without climbing under it. many by the HF tire mound and put it on the tung. I have seen it mounted on the front wall of flatter front trailers. Yet other keep it in the unit that pulls it. Still other use the same size tire that they use on the puller and just carry one spare.

One could even make a dropped floor, under the bed to hold it.

my other idea was to make it a table at the front, on my first trailer I was going to make it into a rear table but it did not work for me.

So, on my new trailer I wanted it to be on the front but that means no front bonnet but this man made it better. viewtopic.php?f=21&t=58565

I have not mounted my spare tire on either of my builds. I simply carry it along with my trailer tool kit (spare hub, wrenches, etc.) in the back of my TV when traveling. I keep it stored in my garage mainly to keep it from deteriorating from outside storage. I also keep my two trailer tires coated with Armorall and covered when not in use. I've found that tires deteriorate more from exposure to the elements during storage than they do from actual use.

I went with the under trailer storage. In over 40 years of towing many trailers I have only needed a spare once. I got a compact spare from the wreckers with the 5 x 4.5" pattern I needed and supported it under the trailer with an old broken bike frame. A piece of angle iron would work just fie too. I had it in front of the axle (as in this picture) but moved it to behind the axle to free up the space under the doors for shoe bins that slide in under the trailer at night. The compact spare doesn't need to be the same size as your regular tires as it won't matter if the trailer is exactly level if/when you ever have to use it. I used a few chain links at one end for the "hinge" end of the carrier and a turnbuckle at the other end. I put a cable tie through the turnbuckle to prevent is vibrating open.

When first contemplating a location, I saw that I couldn't mount my spare under the trailer, for lack of clearance (I thought I would off-road it, later), so I mounted mine directly to the front wall (an advantage for a flat, non-teardrop front end),

I have a single beam drawbar, and having the open space on top of it, I thought it ideal to let the spare tires' weight be supported by it. I used a 1/2 diameter carriage bolt to secure it to my front wall, with a self-centering bearing inside the hub. I used locking chains to make it safer. But, after I reluctantly, HAD to have a tonguebox (for balance/storage needs), I really couldn't find another place for the spare; besides, by then, I liked the look, and then again, the weight balance would change. I didn't favor the appearance of the 27" diameter tire conflicting with the width of the box, and after I found a box of similar width (to the tire),

I devised a sliding tonguebox mount,

• made a triangular base from treated wood
• attached boat-seat sliders to it
• added upside-down caster to support alum.box plate (red circled)
• mounting plate pull handle, locking latch (for travelling)
• flexible connections to battery in box
• spare tire neatly tucked behind tonguebox!

and kept the spare in its' original space (just unlock the base, slide the box forward, access the spare). A lot of work to make, sorta complicated, but it works.

added mine on the front vertical for show, but decided to angle it a little so I could put the battery access behind it.

We do not have one. I bought an adapter so that I can use the TV spare.

Having worked at a garage that also did towing and roadside assistance, don't mount the spare under the vehicle. If/when you need it and you're out and it's rainy/snowy/muddy etc you'll thank me. Also remember, your trailer isn't going to be as high off the ground with a flat tire, and you should NEVER be under a vehicle supported by a jack.

While not for a TD, I am designing a swing away system for my barn door CT which will mount on the back and swing around to the side. For me, this will allow for better weight distribution and easy access for my rear galley.

Mine is mounted on the tongue and pivots from flat to vertical when I need in my box.

I didn't build my teardrop, it was made in 1948 with no provision for a spare. So I built a bulkhead forward of the door to hold the electrical panel, battery, and spare tire. So, it's in the cabin with me. Along with the jack, lug wrench, and axle stand.
