Tyvek paper

Has any one tried putting tyvek paper on the wood exterior before skinning with aluminum, or a s this a dumb idea?

My opinion, it won't matter. Tyvek sheds water, it's a directional fiber. The aluminum skin will seal, the plywood, except from below. Shedding water also. As long as you seal the edges correctly.

My friend has some extra tyvek and I thought it would be one more barrier just in case.

Yes used it on the roof of this camper...never did it before on the previous 29 campers. Had it left over form a job and wanted to use it up. Don't know i if it helps or not. Probably at least smooths a few irregularities out some. Obviously did not use it on the sides, which is what it designed for, verticle not horizontal but hey I am a rebel!

Its a great idea. Unlke plywood, Tyvek is made to be used on the exterior of buildings. Its a natural vapor barrier and won't wick moisture, like plywood. Its also thermally stable, so it won't expand and contract with changes in heat and humidity, like plywood. If it is wrapped around the bottom of the plywood, it may help keep moisture out, especially if you seal it with a urethane or similar finish.

I'm not saying it's a dumb idea, just not sure what it's function would be. Thoughts as to it's mission?

Seal your plywood exterior with The Mix or better yet, epoxy before you apply you're aluminum/trim/sealant and your camper should outlast you.
