Need glasses/phone shelf ideas

Hi everyone,

I need a place to put my glasses, cell phone, and maybe a book that is convenient to the head end of the bed inside my teardrop. I'm needing a little inspiration for how to make a small shelf on the wall that looks good. Can you all post up some pictures of what kind of solution you used in your trailer?

On my weekender I was able to install two full width shelves at the head of the bed. The bottom shelf was actually covering the front bottom bevel area where my DC wiring ran from the battery. The top shelf was installed with ledgers on three sides and pocket screws. The bottom shelf held our night time stuff and the top shelf held our duffel bags and clothing. If your side walls can accommodate it, a full width shelf is the way to go.

We used a small basket from Hobby Lobby on each side that is big enough to hold a book, phone, wallet and small flashlight. I then hang my glasses on the side next to the curved wall.

A headboard shelf is a must! I added another USB charging port in ours right in the middle to make it easier for phone charging.

We used a small basket from Hobby Lobby on each side that is big enough to hold a book, phone, wallet and small flashlight. I then hang my glasses on the side next to the curved wall.

I used both ideas. I made a folding shelf, piano-hinged, with slide-locks to keep it from falling (my head is under it at night). It is slightly cut-away on one side, to access various small storage spaces, and the 120vac plugs and USB charging station behind it. Underneath the shelf, there's a hanging basket for my wife's CPAP? machine, with attached nylon bag to store the sleeping mask and hoses.She hasn't used the trailer, so I use it for other storage at night. Also, under the shelf, but mounted in the corner above mattress height, is Sterilite 3-drawer organizer, I use for my glasses, wallet & keys, and small flashlight and phone. I think I paid $12 for the basket at HD, and $5 for the drawer set at Walmart.

Mine is sort of like CorgiShack's. (Mine has a shelf is on each side with the back door in between.) Many of us make ours that way. Mine is basically a piece of 1x4 plus the same trim strip as his but from Lowes. A 1x4 is wide enough for eye glasses, wallet, paperbacks, clocks, flashlights, etc. You should plan to have something solid behind it to screw to. I put in a 1x2 when I was building the wall.

Thank you all for the ideas! Incidentally, Sharon, you have the same reading lights I do in your camper.



As you can see, I have a dashboard/electrical raceway across the front "headboard" area. The dashboard has plugs, outlets, switches, and the reading lights. It sticks out 3" or so from the front wall.

I was thinking after seeing some of your pictures that I might be able to do a 3 or 4" deep shelf that runs all the way across, maybe 3 inches below the dashboard. I could put a trim on the front that would provide a lip so things don't fall off. Alternatively, I could install smaller side shelves on the horizontal 1x3 wall beams that you can see exposed in the photo. My concern with the first option would be hitting my head on the shelf. But it would be a very convenient place to put stuff. Got to see where my head is when I am lying down and if there is space above it for the shelf. Thoughts?

If you have enough length for your mattress, why not build a shallow cabinet (4" to 6") from the floor to the bottom of your dash with covered storage areas on both ends that will cover your wiring and several shelves in the center area for your night time stuff.

be careful when it comes to installing a full width overhead shelve - as long as you have 'more than' enough bed sleeping length you should be good BUT... mine came with a full width shelve and as much as I loved it for all of the things I could store on it - I hated it every time I would wake up and bang my head on it when would I raise up when waking up. I ended up cutting it in place at each end thus creating corner shelves that are working fine now. (I still miss the full width shelve.) My mattress length had a lot to do with it being about 75 inches long along with my height, just wasn't enough length room for me to slide away from the front wall when sleeping along with my trailer having to much of the curved/contour leading edge section at the front top of it. If the shelve could have been mounted higher it probably would have been fine but he higher you go the more into the curve you end up. trial and ere.

Sharon, you have the same reading lights I do in your camper.

I noticed that, yes, and I love mine. They are great for in-bed reading. I love them even more since I replaced the incandescent bulbs with SMD soft white LEDs.

If you find that you don't have room for a shelf, KennethW's idea of shoe organizers would work; or, you can purchase hanging pocket pouches for RVs at most RV stores or online. If you're handy at sewing, you could make some, too.
