Exterior finishing for plywood

Sorry if this is in the wrong section. I wasn’t sure where to ask this. What is the most common method for finishing plywood for the exterior if not skinning. Sealing + primer + epoxy paint ? Or ? Any help is appreciated

On my 1rst build, I used white epoxy paint. It held up well until it sat uncovered outside for a few years.

Glidden Gripper primer, thinned a bit for first few coats, really try to get full coverage, edges crannies much as possible, then at full strength, a couple more coats.

Then porch paint, color of your choice after that.

Or something glossy high tech if you want

For the Glidden do you usually roll it on or spray ? I’m assuming roll to get full coverage

We found "bent plywod” as on TD roofs for example tend to develop tension cracks after a while , which lets water in and then that’s the end of the roof … We ( many ) found that covering the plywood with a thin fabric ( canvas ), then painting, really helps prevent this and you can overlap the roof edges for more “waterproofing” …

Roll and brush.

Gripper works great to glue canvas down as well, saturate the cloth before.

I used Zinsser primer and Rustoleum on my weekender with 1/4" skins. Did a lot of prep work with fiberglass on all corners and joints and epoxy fillers in all the little cracks first. Rolled everything on with a 4" foam roller but make sure it is good for oil base paint. I rolled three coats of Rustoleum with the last coat diluted 25% with mineral spirits to give it a sprayed on look.

I don't think it's possible to achieve reliable protection for plywood with any type of primer and paint without using fibers, either canvas and paint or fiberglass and paint, as they do in boats building. But that is just my opinion.
