I'm still happy to have the reversible fan motor and the better cover to keep rain out. 10 speed settings is more than I need, but aren't really a problem, either. wouldn't cost the mfr much to either give the thing some voltage protection, or at least give it a wider possible range of working voltages so it's not so sensitive. but apparently they're plenty happy giving out control boards via warranty and selling more besides.

it's a tiny thing, and it's a fixable/preventable problem. so it just winds up being an irritation more than anything.

I removed the 3 sp control on my fantastic fan and replaced it PWM motor control from ebay. Its the one with the remote potentiometer so I was able to use the original hole and knob for speed control.

I bought a Fantastic fan with no control board, and added a clear plastic cover over it.

I can leave my fan wide open in any rain and no water comes in.

That one is too small for the fantastic fan. The one I used looked like this one. I do think that it required a little bit of modification to the post or the knob to allow it to work. These kind of projects always require some "hot rodding"

So what I did was buy the single direction four speed from maxxair, cheapest one. Removed the control board, and put in a dpdt toggle switch and a pwm controller from Amazon. Fit perfectly, under twenty bucks. I now have the best of both worlds, totally variable speed with reverse. It is also very effeceint due to the pwm pcba

Another question, I found some affordable maxxair 14" fans but from the pictures I can't tell if they come with the inner molding/trim piece. Some of them look like they literally just screw down on top and you are left to finish and trim it yourself.

I swapped out the square switch with toggle, easy to drill round hole.

My MaxFan is 7 yrs old. I have the hand crank model, not the remote control model.
I have had it out in lots and lots of bad weather in all seasons.
Often I leave the vent open - no fan running. In that case, no water comes in unless the wind is blowing hard in the direction of the intake and pushing the rain directly at the air intake/exhaust, I will start feeling a few drops.
In that case I close the vent and open a window or other ventilation ports.

If the wind is blowing rain hard at any of the other 3 sides I am getting no rain.

Its been a good vent for me.
