Fan and roof thickness issue

Postby 23Sojourney45 » Tue Jul 09, 2024 1:00 pm

Has anyone had this issue? I bought a fan vent through amazon and the description says that its recommended roof thickness: 37-85mm. When I received it and took it out of the box, I looked at the gap between the inside trim and the fan, and its too much. Mind you, this is the way it came in the box. What I mean by the "inside trim" is the part that goes inside the cabin and up into the fan housing, its the part that you screw into your ceiling. Well, I took out the fan out of the box to see if there was anything blocking the inside, nope. :x It literally sits on the inside part of the fan at 2 3/4 inches or 69.85 mm as its shortest. The description says that its recommended for 37mm -85mm roof thickness. My roof/ceiling thickness is 1 3/4 inches. Have any of you encountered this problem? did you simply cut off the inside trim to fit your ceiling? Its plastic and I don't know how i'm going to trim all 4 edges so that it doesn't crack. My wife and I tried flipping it over and that will work, BUT the trim part that goes inside the housing is now facing down towards the cabin floor. Obviously if we left it this way we would hit our heads on it since its sticking out. I've posted the link from amazon. I could return it and get another one but I wanted to know what you guys thought. It seems like a great fan and I wouldn't want to return it, but if I have to, I will.

I contacted the company and they replied with the smallest they have is 3 inches. But, the amazon site says 37mm (just under 1.5 inches)lol. I'm debating still on whether to cut it (how? jigsaw? may crack since I don't have a grinder) . I'm also looking for ones that have a smaller gap.

You need to simply cut the inside trim to your required height. The fan has a lip on the inside so you get some wiggle room. Not sure the directions did'nbt show this unless, like me, threw them out.

The directions were simple and to just put the fan ventilation flange up into the main fan and screw. No mention of anything else not fitting or cutting to size.

I know this isn't the same brand fan but perhaps these instructions for maxxair fan might help (see step 6).

https://library.maxxair.com/wp-content/ ... 1-2017.pdf

I have the 5100k model and I don't recall how I cut it for sure but I think I used my Jigsaw going really slow and it worked for me. However, I am not 100% sure as this was several years ago and my memory isn't very good, ha! I would think a small trim hand saw (ie coping saw) might work. The cut edge fits up inside the fan box and my cut did not show.

Best wishes,
Harry :)

I just replaced the trim ring on my Fantastic fan. I had cut off 3" of it. My jigsaw worked fine.

@Foxontherun, thanks for the pdf, how detailed are those instructions? lol. Mine didn't come with anything like step 6 suggested. No mention of cutting anything to size until I reached out to the company and they said "trim it." I do have a jigsaw (don't we all teardrop builders? lol), but I also have a hand held manual saw like in the picture. Now, I can start cutting/trimming.... Thanks again.
