Bad Bug Alert

Postby madjack » Thu Aug 10, 2006 8:15 pm

...in case any of you haven't seen it, there is a new bug out there that exploits Windows operating systems...this potential bug is so bad that even Homeland Security issued a warning...on The MS update site, the fix carried a special URGENT WARNING, CRITICAL UPDATE warning, above and beyond their usual warnings...I urge all to get this latest update before you become an unknowing victim...the best way to fight such things is to be PROACTIVE rather than reactive......
this PSA brought to you by.....

Does that have anything to do with explosives in Gatorade bottles?

Mike...

P.S. What is a PSA, a Proactive Security Alert?

...that is as good a definition as any..."THEY" say this is one of the worst since the Blaster worm several years ago...I know I spent a good deal of time cleaning several unprotected PC's last time around..."THEY" say it is already out in the wild and doing mischief...and I wouldn't trust anything inna Gatorade bottle anyway

Madjack,
I run Linux but this machine has another partition that's XP. Where do I go to get the fix?

I know this is serious stuff and I feel for those affected, but as an Apple user since day one, this crap always brings a smile to my face.

And the old excuse about no one wanting to bother with infecting Macs doesn't hold water any longer. Since OSX, you simply CAN'T infect a Mac.

I've been using them since 1986, and I NEVER had a virus, nor KNEW any Mac user that did either.
Here we go again!

There are no known viruses for Mac OS X, and there are no current known viruses or exploits for the Linux operating system.

My advice is to take the plunge and get Mr. Gates and his shoddy software out of your lives. I think Linux and the Open Source software movement would be a good fit for the different sort of folks that build their own travel trailers.

A good place to start your path to Linux is with a release called Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a version of Linux that is designed to be easy to use.... in fact their tag line is "Linux for human beings." If you visit their site and fill out your information they will send you an installation and live CD for free. Completely and totally free... no strings, just free. The live CD will allow you to run the Linux operating system from your CD drive without installing anysoftware... once you become comfortable with the software you can then install it on your machine.

The Ubuntu site is here: http://www.ubuntu.com/

It is so easy and so cool. There are hundreds of Open Source software projects that produce products that rival any commercial product. Open office = Microsoft Office, GIMP = Photoshop an.d tonnes of applications like GPS drive... to many to list here. For a comprehensive list visit: http://sourceforge.net/top/mostactive.php?type=week

It is all FREE! You can even package it and sell it if you want.... I make part of my living selling support for open source software, and I don't work that hard ;)

To read more about Open Source: http://www.opensource.org/

There are thousands of distros out there. You just need to do your research and find the one that best appeals to you. I prefer Slackware. I chose based on a comment a read about it: If you learn Red Hat, you know Red Hat. If you learn Slackware, you know Linux. Slackware doesn't have very many GUI tools. Most of the configuration is done by editing text files (I got pretty good at using vi). It not for the casual Linux user. I'm still learning a lot about it.

Now all I need to do is get DW convinced to switch. Until then, I'm stuck with dual boot. I tried once, but her and the kids complained about their games not working and the web sites they go to need Shockwave and IE.

IE I've already ditched. Some times I still need Flash/Shockwave/QT, tho.

I have a volunteer post in which I am required to document some things, and they have to be submitted as word files. Sux.

I wish I could dump IE, but I work for a Micro$oft shop, so everything is written for IE. We even use Exchange for email! But I also have FireFox loaded :shhh: and use it whenever I can.

..yeah, yeah, yeah...I have played with Knoppix, Open Office and GIMP and was seriously underwhelmed and I watched hackers at this years Black Hat Conference hack Macs BUT THIS THREAD is about a very serious BUG that is running in the wild affecting Windows machines. Folks running WXP need to get the fix and patch their machines pronto...you know WINMS...what most of the world uses...so get the fix and get it fixed...you owe it to yourself and the rest of the general PC community....truly not knocking the Mac or Linux community just trying to keep THIS THREAD ON TOPIC...'cause it's important.....
