My advice is to take the plunge and get Mr. Gates and his shoddy software out of your lives. I think Linux and the Open Source software movement would be a good fit for the different sort of folks that build their own travel trailers.
A good place to start your path to Linux is with a release called Ubuntu. Ubuntu is a version of Linux that is designed to be easy to use.... in fact their tag line is "Linux for human beings." If you visit their site and fill out your information they will send you an installation and live CD for free. Completely and totally free... no strings, just free. The live CD will allow you to run the Linux operating system from your CD drive without installing anysoftware... once you become comfortable with the software you can then install it on your machine.
The Ubuntu site is here: http://www.ubuntu.com/
It is so easy and so cool. There are hundreds of Open Source software projects that produce products that rival any commercial product. Open office = Microsoft Office, GIMP = Photoshop an.d tonnes of applications like GPS drive... to many to list here. For a comprehensive list visit: http://sourceforge.net/top/mostactive.php?type=week
It is all FREE! You can even package it and sell it if you want.... I make part of my living selling support for open source software, and I don't work that hard
