Rookie mistake I knew better

Postby Woodbutcher » Tue Aug 29, 2006 8:48 pm

Well I got so caught up in putting on my outside first layer roof I did not pay attention to my buried wires. I figured I better check the wires before I closed up the roof with the final skin. I ran 110 through the wires and sure enough I stapled right into my roof vent wire. It made a nice pop, as you can see from the burnt wire. So I had to tear into my new roof and fix it. I put a wood patch over my repair and will sand it in the morning when I put on the final skin. At least I can cover my dumb mistake and only you guys will know.

..better to find it now than latter...like at the campground, when you hoook up...let this serve as a warning to others to ALWAYS mark where your wire runs and other sensetive stuff are located....

Damn! Damn! Damn!

But like MJ said, better now than later. Easier to fix now, and could have been disasterous out camping.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Wirebutcher, I put a nail from the air nailer through a 12 volt line. Killed one of my lights and one that was yet to be installed. Just blew the fuse. I can get around it by tapping into another run but I am not happy.

I try to keep all wire runs straight, either up or across, and make a simple map with measurements I stick on the garage wall. I can never quite remember where the runs are, but the diagram helps a lot.

If the wire isn't damaged too badly, you may be able to still use it if you can manage to pull the brad out.

Photos of your wire runs help too! Paste a photo or two up on the garage wall, and it'll always keep you thinking...

A/F has a good point. if the staple is the only thing making contact, just pull it out... unlikely the point of a staple would push the copper wire through.

I did pull the staple out and it worked fine then. But I separated the wires and taped up each side. The sad part was I was looking right at the wire sticking out as I went over it with the staple gun. I managed to miss all the other buried wires. I only have a few spots where I run through the roof ribs. I guess I can only do one thing at a time.

I find my ability to think I'll know where things are before putting a skin on and my ability to not know where they are once I've put the skin on to be amazing.

I constantly believe that I have learnt from this experience and won't be so stupid again.

Until the next time........

I learned not to put wires inside walls and roofs..I'll run wires last and hide them the best I can, but they will be repairable if need be.
