Swedish Electricity vs USA Electricity...

Postby kayakrguy » Thu Sep 07, 2006 1:56 pm

Folks,

'There is no such thing as a Dumb Question' Good thing, in my case! <g>

My candidate for the honor of being the first to have one is as follows.

We ordered cool reading lights from Boaters World--saw them on Tom S's build and ordered same...they are advertised as being Swedish in origin.

I opened the package when it came expecting to find two little wires that I could use to test the lamps. Wrong!

Instead of two wires what you have is the two wires going to the lamp buried in some sort of connector box. This box has 6! tiny screws. The real genius of this is that there is no wiring diagram to help you with this thing.

Now, I am sure that two screws are for the hot wire and return coming from the breaker box. Two must be for wires to continue the circuit to another device if you want to. Question 1) What order do you wire this thing in...say the screws pole are #1 (two nearest the lamp) #2 (the two in the middle) 3# (the two farthest from the lamp) which poles get the hot and return from the box? Which are for attaching wire to continue a parallel circut? And What is the third one for? And man, you need a jeweler's loupe (spelling?) to see those srews!

Thanx,

Jim

Any chance you could post a picture?
Commandant Louis Joseph Lahure has a singular distinction in military history - he defeated a navy on horseback. Occupying Holland in January 1795, the French continental army learned that the mighty Dutch navy had been frozen into the ice around Texel Island. So Lahure and 128 men simply rode up to it and demanded surrender. No shots were fired.

Mel,

I just got off Kodak's miserable proprietary stuff over to Picasa. Gotta figure how to downsize and upload to email...can attach to yahoo mail, but not to this stuff yet...sorry,

Just think of 6 screws-poles attached to the two wires that would normally come out of the fixture. The two wires coming out of the fixture--the two you would normally wire nut/solder/etc disappear into the housing in which the screw poles are mounted. That's the best verbal sense I can make of it...

Picasa - Go to "tools", "options", "email", and set the file size to 640.

Then drag the picture down to the lower left box/tray, click email and send it....

That's it.....

so you've got:

Code: Select all
     1 2 3
----#0#0#0#
----#0#0#0#

Where - is wire, # is the block and 0 are the lugs.

If so I'd bet 1 is holding the light wire in the block, and 2 & 3 are like you said: power feed in and connections to chain a second light.

PS: under Picasa you can resize pictures by:
1) hold the pictures in the tray
2) Select File -> Export picture to Folder
3) In the dialog specify a folder location and set the Image size options to: Resize to: and what ever size on the slider you want
4) click ok.

My "GUESS" is you have two bus bars for multipling wire from one fixture to another... Each "bulb wire" is connected to each bus bar and there are three positions #1-#2-#3 to connect to... Maybe bulb is connected to #1 and #2 is used for power source (fuse/switch) and #3 is for multipling power to next fixture...

The Euro's don't like wire nuts, so I suppose as noted above there are busbars for extra connections.

Jim's pic is right on and yes, it is a 12 volt lamp, I should have made that clear. I DID take pics and am trying to use your advice to get pic to here.

Best help I have on hand is Diet Coke....<g>

Will post when I get this figured out,

Jim

Ok, Mel and all...

Thanks for pushing my button to get pics....
I got the Avatar loaded--it is the Seal of County Armagh, Ireland, where my Irish folks hailed from....

I got the pics into my album!....if you click on the album you will see the pics fo the light wiring!

I cannot figure out how to get to my album when I am in the mail composing screen or I would have embedded them here....

If any of you can embed the 'swedish meatballs' I would be grateful.
And, how DO you get to your album from this screen??

It looks like you need to put - on 1 side, + on the other side. And the middle is to ground it to the frame.

Looking at your photo do the following - Ground connect to the upper left - positive to the upper right.(this is where the switch connects to)
