Feels Like Earthquake Weather...

Postby Dean in Eureka, CA » Wed Oct 11, 2006 2:53 pm

It was only supposed to get up to 57 today. The official temp right now, from the weather station out on Woodley Island, which is right in the middle of Humboldt Bay is 68.
Up on Humboldt Hill, which overlooks the bay... It's 82 in the shade.
I'm cutting dark bronze anodized aluminum storefront metal out in front of my shop and I have to use gloves to handle the stock lengths, because they are so friggin' hot.
This 'Ol Fogcrawler is definately outta his elimate right now... :sweaty:

Earthquakes around here usaully happen when the weather gets like this. :frightened:

Dean, when I was growing up in So Cal, my great aunt who had lived in So Cal since 1920's used to tell us about earthquake weather. One day when we were eating outside in the patio, she said this was earthquake weather, and about an hour later, sure enough, we had an earthquake. I cann't remember any damage, but it was enough to rock the patio furniture. I don't believe in earthquake weather. Cal just gets so many earthquakes that people try to make some connection.

Good luck up there, Dean. Always be prepared for at least 72 hours on your own (remember Katrina).

You want weather extremes? Try traveling across country this time of the year. I left So Cal a week ago, spent four days in Eastern PA & NJ. Now I am towing my 15.5 Kenskill back home. My path has been across So Cal, AZ, NM,TX panhandle, MO-IL, IN, OH, WV, PA, NJ.
I left wearing shorts and wore them all the way, esp in extreme heat in OK. Ahead of me, fortunately, a tornado landed in IN. I had a fine trip with no real weather issues once I was not trying to sleep near OK City. Very hot.
The trip back proved I was wise to have a trailer with a change of clothes for all weather. There was cold, wind and rain in PA over the weekend but it was warm enough on Monday in NJ to make margaritas!!
Things change. Since the first night in OH, there has been rain and lots of wind across OH, IN and IL. In MO the temps dropped to 43, they predicted mid 30's, some rain but no wind. Temps from MO, across OK stayed 43-53 until I reached the TX border, only then was there a hint of sun.
Tonight Amarillo is supposed to drop to the thirties, I love my little ceramic heater. Tomorrow across NM may be nice but I think there is more rain between here and So Cal. Glad I had a varied wardrobe.
I want my So Cal Sun, you can have the foggy North.

Oh dear. This discussion has already reached the "My Dad's earthquakes are bigger than your Dad's earthquakes" level.... :shhh:

Fred,
That's pretty good... lots of little quakes are way better than one big one and that's what surprised me when I checked the map for my area.
We average about 7 quakes a day, looks like your average is much, much higher.
Although there have recently been over 300 small quakes in the last week here in California, only one is shown in my location. Usually, there are anywhere from 4-20 or so shown on the map for my area... but just one little one last week... The plates might be locked up, getting ready to bust loose. :o

Doug,
It's kinda neat when you hear them coming, gives you a moment or two of warning, but sometimes you're tryin' to figure out what the heck was that was and wham, it hits. The most wicked one I've ever heard, sounded like a freight train rumbling by right outside the house, except there weren't any train tracks close by.

We just had an earthquake here [Maine] It was centered around Acadia National Park. It was considered a relatively mild one. but they had to close the Park loop road for a bit. There was enough big stuff that had fallen from the mountains that it had to be blasted before it could be moved.

Just heard from my sister in Hawaii. They just had a rare earthquake today. :?
She said it felt like the dog walking on the bed. Her husband, a local, swore it was a 9!!!
