Yes sir - that's exactly what you do. After it dries (usually the next day depending on hardeners used, outside temp, humidity, etc.) treat it just like finishing putty.
Even better on that first day, would be a scraper. I use a paint scraper or a cabinet scraper. You'll get a nice finish, no dust! If you try to sand "green" epoxy, you'll just gum up the sand-paper. Using chopped 'glass could make a milky looking filler, due to the introduction of bubbles.
If you need to match surrounding wood, try using sanding dust from scraps of the wood you are using. I just empty my sander's dust bag into a coffee can, for use later.The filler will tend to come out a bit dark, so, I usually add some really light "dust" (sand some pine) to the mix. Trial and error will show you the right mixture.
