I built the frame of my hatch to go inside the sides of the tear, and then put an aluminum flat moulding to go from the hatch over the side of the tear with the weather strip in between.
It's easyer to get the hatch to actually fit if you cut out the parts and then assemble the hatch actually inside the curve of the tear using clamps and spacers inbetween. At least, that is how I did it and it worked.
