Cedar strip canoe

I think a cedar strip tear drop might go nicely as a hauler for my cedar strip canoe

The canoe might dwarf the camper - it is 17 1/2 ft long.

Do you want to talk about how you would do it?

I am over the top intrigued by the whole idea.

Dave
This was a very interesting project to do. I did it in a two-car garage over several weeks. Just like a tear drop trailer, you have to decide on what you want the shape to be before you start. This idea tranlates into forms (or stations as they are called) that are placed every foot or so on a long frame (called a strongback). You then attach your strips of wood to these stations with either staples or clamps and glue them together. The whole wooden structure is then sanded, covered with fiberglass and resin and trimmed with wood. The best written info is a book by Ted Moores, called Canoecraft. It is published by Firefly Books Ltd., ISBN 1-55209-342-5
Hope this helps!

Dan,

While I have never built a canoe, I know the basic technique.

When that combines with a tear design, it gets sticky. I have seen tears built with strips laid pretty flat, so that the final design is the same as a conventional design. That might make a good product, but isn't cutting too much new ground.

It seems one might make a form that is half airstream and half tear drop, but then it gets complicated!

Any ideas?

Love the canoe does give me ideas. Scary enough I was thinking of a plan for a half tear half airstream. With a rounded top

Would the airstream top be polished aluminum?

I was thinking fiberglass and paint, But the wood strips could be neat If I could work out the details.
Are you bringing the canoe to Turkey run?

I was fasinated with the idea a few years ago. So; I started looking online and found a couple that had already been built. They sure looked beautiful.
After seeing it had already been done; it kind of lost its appeal for me.

If was to build one in strip construction the shape would have to be way out there.
Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Ask yourself these simple questions every time you are in doubt about any action.

I have thought a lot about building a Kayak from Strips of wood. Something small and light enough for me to carry alone. me and a buddy of mine built a Boat when we was like 12 years old. ........ It didn't sink...... So, I have learned a few things since then, surely I could do this.

Thanks Dean, I just joined that site, I love to fish in a river near by, But, it's like most places nowdays, nobody will let you cross their land to get to the water. So........... I need something small and light enough to carry from the Road at a Bridge to get it into the water......... And that I can haul in a pickup truck. Thanks again. ;)
