a crunchy day

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

a crunchy day

Postby Miriam C. » Mon Mar 12, 2007 3:19 am

Well it is 2:22 (3:15 now had to feed a baby) in the morning and I am here alone with 1 guest. :) Just me to run havoc on the undefended forums. 8)

Truthfully I am up with a scared baby and trying to figure out why my pictures won't come off the little thingy. Ha. I complain to the forum and it happens.

This is the reason we, Hailey and I are awake. My son got broadsided in my van this afternoon. Flipped the van over to it's top. I look at these pictures and realize how truly blessed we are.

No one was seriously hurt and the bumps and bruises will heal. The baby may afraid to be around strangers for a while. She got passed around by the EMTs and Nurses while getting x-rayed. By the time I got to the hospital she'd had enough. Now she won't let anyone hold her but Grandma.

I am totally amazed the other car has very little damage. It hit just right and over it went. I am also amazed at the behavior of some of the fire department. When Mike and I walked to the van a firefighter looked straight at us and said "just another Missouri driver." Completely callus. Mike didn't hit the man but let him know that was our son in a tone no one would mistake for friendly,

The problem isn't Missouri drivers the problem is our street signs. We have yield signs instead of stop signs. Been that way forever. When cars are parked on the streets and the drivers don't see one another this is the result. Neither car was speeding. There is a witness that says the van was flying but the driver of the other car said if he had been going faster she would have missed him. See she hit her brakes and so did he. Doesn't work well.

I don't like those yeild signs where you can't see around the corner and down the street very far. I have a rental house that sits on a corner like that. When ever I go there I always stop instead of yeild, because by the time you are in the intersection it is all ready to late to see if there is another car coming.
Sorry to hear about your son and baby, they'll heal and the van can be replace.

Oh Miriam,

Hold that baby tight! She's a gift that you get a second time. Ditto for your son! Regardless of who's at fault, a firefighter's insensitive remark, or a ruined car, thankfully every one is OK. :worship: I'll say a prayer of thanks tonight.

Thanks all of you for the kind words. I guess the saga is going to heat up. The insurance adjuster says there is no way the woman was doing 20mph. Her air bags went off. Can we say fight?

I went to get some pictures of the road for the insurance company and there are no skid marks :o The neighbors came out though. They all wanted to know if everyone was alright. Bunch of really nice people. They have complained to the city repeatedly over the obstructions and code violations on the corner. They have also complained about drivers going too fast. All said the woman didn't have her drivers license or insurance card with her.
The offending corner. My sons view.

6 foot fence and an SUV on the corner blocking the fire hydrant. Do you think the fire department should have asked for a code violation. This SUV parks in the same place everyday. I hate to cause people trouble but nice people shouldn't be in danger over parking. And Joplin's police really need to do their job better. I am thinking the paper might like the pictures.

First of all Miriam I am glad every one is Ok....Just from the picture you showed it looks to be about a 30mph impact. The impact is low on the door and that is why it flipped. It doesn't take much to over turn a vehicle that is higher profile when struck low like that. For her air bags to deploy you only have to hit the sensor and that can be as low as 10mph.

:o So my adjuster is blowing smoke huh. I guess I can see it going over to the side, but landing upside down is amazing. I am hoping they don't fight about it. My van is gone and the kids are fine. The other driver is fine.

Insurance companys like to fight and I look at this corner and know neither driver could see the other. Even if Larry had stopped he would have needed to pull in the intersection to see her.

Her problem is the speed limit in this area is 20mph and there are no skid marks at all. All the drama. :(

Glad to hear that everyone was OK. I can see why vision is impaired at that intersection. Something HAS to be done about that Suburban/Tahoe parked on the corner. So what if they live there, you aren't supposed to park there in the first place.

Their neighbors should be the most concerned. Not only do they have to cross that intersection every time they leave the house, that guy's SUV will slow down the FD from getting hoses to the adjacent homes.

Miriam, again sorry about what happen to your family and the van. Van do have high center gravity. That picture you posted remind me so much of my rental house streets. Usually the curbs should be painted yellow for no parking, also I don't see no sign saying no parking. But that SUV is in violation as they are parked in front of the fire hydrant!!!

Also the way that street is, you pretty much have to come to a complete stop to see what is coming down the street. There is no way that you can drive through that yeld sign at 20mph and see any traffic in time.
