Gull Wing Doors

Thought people might like to see the friction hinges and door in place.
Originally I fitted 12” hinges to the door but the weight was just a little to much so I have replaced them with 16” ones. There is no sagging with the larger hinges but I am not sure what weight they would hold if I were to try and hang some canvas sides from them.

Steve. are those doors high enough so you can walk under them? I can remember lunch wagons on construction jobs that have similar lift-up doors, and workers were constantly slamming their heads against their sharp corners, often with severe cuts to the foreheads.

I think those doors of yours would work fine if they could be raised even higher to eliminate any trips to the hospital in the middle of the night. However, if they are above head-height........no problem.

Yeah I was woundering about the height also and remember someone else had the same idea but decided against it. Seams to me in that topic there where more cons than pros. I think one bad thing is trying to reach the door to close it when your inside.

I would not put gull wing doors on a tear if you paid me..... sorry to sound so negative, but I go in and out 10 times a day... just too much hassle..

A gull wing has to be open all the way, a regular door I can open half way, grab something, and close...

for me they just don't buy me anything... the hatch is different.. first, no choice.. second, I open it, it stays open all day...

If the door was to raise beyond level and it was raining, all the water would run into the tear.

I am going to give the door a try for a while. I did know of the pitfalls when I decided to try it and I built the door so I could convert it to side opening if I didn’t like it or if I spent to much time at the casualty department with head wounds.
The hatch stays were from Ebay, they are manufactured by a company called AXA and they do the job perfectly.
