Lynn,

There are a lot of things that we don't need in life, but we still buy them. Cast iron is more than simply a cooking implement, it the source of great meals, improved cooking skills, new friends, a sore back, compulsive-obsessive behavior, bankruptcy....on second thought maybe it isn't such a good idea.

When you finally get your ovens I'm sure you will enjoy them greatly. I love to camp cook, so it's a great hobby for me.

Joanne

Hey Joanne,

I thought of you yesterday when I was at a local Cummins traveling tool store. They had two dutch ovens there. I was tempted, mentioned it to hubby and he said, we don't need the weight. :o

They had a large one, I'd say it had a 16" diameter and another with about a 9". I'm not sure but I was tempted. With all the tools we purchased I knew I had plenty of time to work on hubby about possibly purchasing a dutch oven. But I'll have to wait until his wallet stops shaking. I think we spent over $300. on the tools.

Anyway, if anyone's looking for a dutch oven that might be a place to get one.

Hmm, and since the IRS decided to send me a letter saying I made and error in my taxes and now have to pay them even more money, I better wait a wee bit longer.

It's a good thing we bought the tools before the mail came. Can you believe it arrived the next day...ugh!

This might be a first that Uncle Sam has gotten in the way of purchasing a Dutch Oven. Well, given the hundreds of years of history and the millions of people, maybe I'm not the first. :?

Hi, girls

Postby mandy » Tue Jul 31, 2007 5:51 pm

I have been wanting to build a Teardrop for so long and everytime I would mention it to someone they just gave me a face. I was encouraged to build after I saw the participation of all the women here.
I have built several thing but nothing along this scale. I love the fact that you all go the gatherings. I miss gatherings. I used to participate in several Mountain Man gatherings but they kind of discourage single women from joining unless your a wife of one of the men. They had Dutch Oven Cookoffs, period costumes nothing past 1840. But after my brother left them I couldn't stay  So I am missing somthing that I think I have found here :)

Thanks for being an outlet for my overwrought creativity.

Hi Mandy Welcome to the Lady teardroppers. You will find a little bit of everything here. Married, single, young, old it doesnt matter. We have a great time.
There is a great section on dutch oven cooking and they have even put out a cookbook you can get here on the forum. I am learning and loving it. Our teardrop is a work in progress. Gatherings are great fun and it doesnt matter who you are, you are automatically part of the teardrop family.
Welcome

:( I guess some have a mountain man mentality toward women. Do you suppose the originals didn't want single women around. 8) Lordy!

Ok Feminist rant over for a minute. Mandy we don't care if you are single or married just have fun...

Mandy, I'm just amazed that the guys had that attitude towards women. You would think that they would be happy to see a single gal who is interested in the same things they are. Of course I'm applying logic to an illogical situation.

Anyway, as it has already been said you are welcome here regardless of your marital status. I have never recieved anything but support and encouragement from the guys here.

Despite the best laid plans, I couldn't manage to pull off a weekend camping--physical therapy called and rescheduled my appointment to midmorning Saturday. At least it was going to be a walk-up site, so I hadn't laid down the money at ReserveAmerica.

Anyhow, while I was waiting in PT, I made a list of all the things I want for the SunSpot. Then I played to my inner cheapskate and cruised the dollar stores and garage sales and second hand stores to see how much stuff I could find. I also finished the curtains and spent an hour in BedBathBeyond checking out some storage options. I found:
a really cool extra wide bucket and a tool caddy that nested perfectly inside, so I have a dishpan/sink with a toting handle, AND a place to store the cleaning supplies that will contain any spills $10 for the bucket, $3 for the tool caddy
    kitchen towels 2/$1
    a tablecloth $2.50
four plastic 'glasses' that match my old camping plates, bowls and mugs 2/$1
an 8" diameter cast iron griddle with a foldable, removable steel and bamboo handle for $3

I also repurposed an 18gal storage bin as a chuck box and a couple of the 'safety' gifts we get at work when we hit certain safety milestones have new homes in the SunSpot. The last gift was a goretex rain jacket from Eastern Mtn. Sports for 2 million accident free hours...but I elevated the 1 million hours gift (a foldable SUV storage area thing that will fit perfectly in either the back of the truck bed, or on the bottom pass-thru shelf of the SunSpot) and the 1.5 million hours gift (a backpack full of emergency supplies and first aid stuff...now it lives in the camper!)

$20...and except for a folding work table or shelf yet to be discovered, the galley equipment is almost all set!

OK ladies I am finally checking in. I have been cruising around on this site for about 6 weeks and picked up my shop built teardrop in Michigan about 3 weeks ago and have been busy ever since with "little projects" to finish. My teardrop is in beautiful shape as the guy who made it did a great job. Putting my touches on it just to enhance it a little, personalize it and call it my own. Check out the pictures in my album for the updates. I will post the cooler drawer tomorrow, as I just finished it today. So after many trips to Home Depot, Menards, and Harbor freight, a new 1/2" drill, lots of screws, brackets etc. I am finally done. (Except for the curtains, which Diane is making). Here's a list of the stuff I have done: Drilled through trailer tongue, mounted hinged storage box
Made outside table, covered with vinyl tablecloth and decked out with fancy upolstry tacks on edges for a retro look
Mounted outside night light by the door
Made custom screen door to fit the doorway for more air and no mosquitos
Made personalized trailer name plaque
Made custom window flowerbox (Diane's request) with beautiful flowers that bloom all year  The box and the door light pop off for travel
Added a memoryfoam topper to the mattress
Reconfigured the bottom cabinet door in the galley to accordian open like the left side, so I could build a elevated drawer for the cooler.
Plan to use an ez up canopy for shade and shelter. Also got a Eureka large solar shade to set up just outside the door to double as a changing room/ porta potty space.
Brutus my little dog has already seemed to claim the teardrp as his own. Hope he doesn't mind sharing.
Looking forward to my first weekend trip this next weekend. Yea I will finally be off call duties for a free weekend! :)
Have enjoyed reading all about all the hard work you gals have put in on your little trailers too. Can't wait to get out of Chicagoland for a little relaxation next week.

Wowie Zowie! You gals are impressive! :clapping hands:

We started with a '56 Benroy some years ago. Bought on an impulse, loved very much; sold to the builder's family.

Moved up to an 11' trailer, then a 15' trailer, both vintage. Kept missing that tear.

We're now working with some friends who are building nifty teardrop shaped cargo trailers. We used prototype #1 a few weeks ago, will start testing prototype #2 in a few weeks. Makes me miss the tear even more.

Would LOVE to build one, but I'm afraid that's on hold for now. Hubby travels 2-3 weeks at a stretch, with only about a week at home inbetween for now (gotta love the Michigan economy - ha). We don't even get out in the '48 United, which needs a paint job let alone start a new build.

We will end up with a tear again. I loved camping in ours. I miss it. We could buy one, but I'd love the satisfaction of saying "we did it". I like using power tools, so that doesn't frighten me. I love painting and being creative.

Now if only I could find a girlfriend to work with me and we'd build 2 tears at once and who needs hubby to help?

I don't get to this board much, so glad I stopped in today though. GREAT Thread!!

Hi all,

Well we actually camped in the Inkwell this weekend. This was a first, we've stayed in it in family yards but that's definitely different than being at a campsite.

It was a lot of fun. Our first camping was with other teardrop builders. And believe it or not we weren't the only TTT. We had a lot of positive comments from folks and some creative ideas for things we still need to do.

We're quite happy with the Inkwell. And we both came up with some "additions" to our plans just having lived in it. I hope to have several camping trips before we're done, so we can find even more ideas and areas where we can improve the build.

Oh for an update on the IRS, hehe they were wrong...I don't owe them, they actually owe me. Gotta love it. Now, if I could just get the letter where they admit it. HA!
