Check Engine Light

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

95%

95% of all car owners NEVER read the owner's manual which is the first place to start as an owner.

Who Hoooo – I’m better than 95 % of all car owners! (lol) I find it a delight to read the owner’s manual – only after searching through about 100 pages of crap (oops) that has to deal with seatbelts and stuff YOU SHOULD KNOW before reaching vital info about fluids, tires and essential stuff.

Well... I blame it on the manufacturers greed. Once we had a few gages that would tell us a bit about what was going on. Now we have one universal idiot light. They have the tech capability to have a simple readout of the trouble codes in layman's terms via the radio or a simple led display. But nooo... we have this infuriating idiot light. It's actually one of consumers top complaints. Of course it makes the dealers and service techs happy because it creates a lot of service work, much of which we are at their mercy as we have no way of knowing how truthful they are about what is wrong. And, there are a few unscrupulous folks in the auto repair business... It is still the number one complaint of consumers nationwide. :(

Toyota won't pay for who's stupidity? Mine, or thier employee's. Of course they won't pay for mine but this situation was all their fault as all the blame lies with them. I met my obligation by taking it in at their prescribed maintenance interval. Failing to do the maintence correctly (not checking for leaks) is their fault.

I've read about this happening to a couple people with this same truck and the replacement cost of the engine was $20K. I don't know if it was the dealership or Toyota itself who paid for their replacement, all I know is that the customer didn't pay. There is no low oil pressure light, just an oil pressure gauge. Which is what I was watching when I had to get it back to work.

This time I was calm, didn't yell or raise my voice. I just said that I wanted to talk to the service manager. I told him my problem and he took care of the rest. I'm saying that if they allow it to happen again, I'll drive it till it siezes up. One time, OK 2 times no way.

Well, 1 down an one to go.

The '95 Nissan PU is now corrected -- no check engine light on.

75 bucks to replace EGR BPT sensor hose.

The Hyundai is in the shop.

Although you can't use an OTC OBD scanner on the '95 Nissan PU (It's in a class by itself as a "transitional" vehicle between the OBD 1 and OBD 2 scanners. Requires special diagnostic equip so I'm told by Auto Zone.)

Even If I'd had and OBD scanner that woulda worked I don't think I'd ever found the EGR BPT sensor hose except by trial and error.

The mechanic started with the EGR (error code 32) determined it was good and worked back from there.

Breate in, Breathe out. Ahhh! clean air.

That's good news Geron... glad you got it fixed fairly cheaply.
I kinda ran into the same info... Seems we have the redheaded stepchild of Nissans? Nobody in my area can figure out how to diagnose one. Last time I just replaced most of the sensors and the plugs and got away with it. I'll have to remember that little EGR hose for future reference. I'd be curious what mileage you get now? The best mine will do is about 21 - 22 mpg... It used to do a lot better.

Gotta run over to SC this week. I'll check. Haven't checked in quite a while.
