You never did say what brand of washer you have. I used to be an appliance repair man and might be able to help if you still want to fix it.

The old Maytags are good machines. New machines for the most part are much more complicated and lower quality. There is not much that can cause a slow fill other than a restriction in the control valve.

When I got called out on a slow fill problem, the first thing I would do is unscrew the hoses from the back of the washer, put the ends in a bucket, turn on the water and check for good flow. If that was OK I would pull the inlet screens out of the valve (with a dental tool) and make sure they were clear. If they were clear, labor being what it is, I'd just replace it the valve. You can however take the valve apart and clean it, and test it by putting 110V to the terminals on each coil.

I got a really good deal about 3 years ago at lowe's on a front-loading washer and a new dryer (the appliances these replaced were bought new in 1980, so I had in fact gotten my money's worth; but I replaced them because I could no longer get the correct heating element for the 1980 dryer or replace the control circuitry in the 1980 washer). Now, if you haven't bought your washer yet, see if Mrs. Ira will go for a front-loader. It cut our water bill by $30 a month (I have teenagers).

Also check for rebates. When I bought my front loader recently becasue the old washer had leaked forever. I applied for:
$100 rebate from the water company
$35 rebate from Power company
$50 rebate from Mfg
$50 delivery rebate from Home depot (they took away the old one too, so no cost to dispose)
signed up for a credit card from home depot and got 1 year of free interest (just be sure to pay the bill off before the end of the year)

so the $799 washer cost a little more than a cheap top loader. in addition to the water savings, it also saves you on dryer costs as they spin at a higher rpm which gets more water out of the clothes so the dryer time is shorter.

Was just thinking of the same .... and see you got the question I was going
to ask Ira.

Three typical problem areas with restricted flow.
The main turn ons are cut back
The strainer is plugged
The inlet valves are partially blocked or...
and most likely the strainer is the culprit.
