I’m just curious about firearms and camping

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

I didn’t mean to rile anyone with that post. I didn’t write it, but I think it is essentially correct.

I wasn’t trying with that to justify the carrying of a weapon in a campground or anywhere with that article.

The article isn’t about guns; it’s about freedom and government. And guns are just an icon, of litmus of that freedom. That in my opinion does explain why America is so caught up with guns… because it isn’t about the guns at all.

SFC HALL,
Some folks got a little riled but one of our freedoms as "citizens" is our right to express our opinions.
I wish to thank you and to say I am grateful for what you are doing right now.

It certainly looks like a justification for carrying a weapon into a campground - the author thinks anyone should carry any weapon anywhere they want.

I see the point that it is about freedom, and not just specifically guns. The disturbing part is the position that individual freedom is more important than anything else. What happens when extremists like this believe that they should be free to enter your property, or disobey any law which they think conflicts with a specific right they choose to find sacred at the moment? You shoot them?

Campgrounds, like anywhere else, have rules which are appropriate to the situation. Anyone who wants to re-write them to suit their purposes, based on some general right, should find another place to camp without so many rules... and they might want to build a spaceship to get there, because here on earth we all need to live together, and that means acknowledging that some sort of flawed government process will be establishing rules.

Guns are just one of those subjects, like abortion and gay rights, that people just seem to get really emotional about.

I often get caught up in the middle of these debates, trying to tell folks that there is a "middle ground", where common sense lives.

I agree that the gun debate is to some degree a debate about things on a lager scale, but there again, the debate turns into a battle of absolutes. Either we have total freedom, or we have none.

I just can not buy into all-or-nothing, black-and-white thinking on ANY subject.

I believe we can have our guns, and still have reasonable gun control. I believe we can eliminate almost all abortions without making them illegal. I believe there is a way to provide equality to gays without trampling the religious beliefs of other people.

But, nothing will get done as long as the absolutists control these debates.

Just to clarify, I do not advocate breaking the law… if it is illegal to carry a gun in a specific instance or place, I do not carry a gun… and didn’t mean that you should.

And I do agree that there are compromises to most everything. Like that old saying goes…

I have never needed a gun in any campground I've visited.

Postby Cory_In_Iowa » Sun Sep 16, 2007 9:20 am

I've camped all over the US. My wife's and my hobby is hiking in the National Parks- we'd like to hike in all 58. That said, I have no problems with those who have guns at home. As far as protection from bears or other animals, that is ludicrous, follow the reasonable guidelines with food and such in bear country and you won't have a problem. I've just never seen any need for a gun anywhere I've camped.

The "Backup" looks like something that will cause you to shoot yourself on the way to the bathroom!

When I started to live alone I did feel the need for a weapon. Over the years a druggie broke into my house, teens broke into my garage and stole some tools, and I walked out one night to find a drunken belligerant man camped out in my truck. I've never pulled my gun on anyone. I take it to the range occaisionally and I bring it back home.

I don't need the problems it might cause me if I carried it on the road.

SFC Hall, consider your security clearance, you have to protect that as well.

I purchased it to protect me from bodily harm only. All my stuff is insured and is replaceable.

On the drive to the Arkansas gathering a few months back, I noticed that every roadside sign along the two-lane highways had bullet holes and dings in it. Some were completely mangled with shotgun blast damage, while others had nice, clean bullet holes from rifles and/or handguns.

I almost stopped at a few of them to take pictures -- probably should have.

I guess a lot of folks in Arkansas feel threatened by road signs.

No, but it did seem like the trajectory of the shots put the shooter right about pickup-bed height.

And, I never knew how dangerous a sign could be. Of course, I do wonder how safe it is to drive those roads at night. with all them bullets flyin' around. I reckon' some of them bullets miss, and carry on for a pretty good distance. :o

I also reckon' that a sign like this could be a little confusing. Ya' think you're about to nail a nice trophy, and "clang", it's just a damn sign. :x

There is a no passing sign ( the long pennant shaped one) that scares the hell out of me every once in awile. I ride the motorcycle to work and if a car is coming the other way in the pre dawn darkness it back lightes it on a curve and you would swear it's the head and sholders of a deer and the 2 posts it is on appear as front legs. I have grabbed a handful of brake more than once. Wish someone would ventilate it with a 12 gage I wouldn't arrive at work with wet drawers.
