Another Surgery

After 9 weeks of physical therapy the range of motion of my shoulder that had rotator cuff surgery in June is limited and the surgeon said I’m up against a brick wall so to speak :( . He said to discontinue any more PT and he will do surgery on it next Thursday. This is what he will do, and he says it won’t be comfortable.
If therapy is not successful, or if a patient can not tolerate therapy, a shoulder manipulation may be performed. This procedure is done under anesthesia :SH :FNP . The health care provider will forcibly bring the shoulder through a range of motion to release the scar tissue  .
He said it’s like 3 months of PT in 30 seconds. I’ll need to re-start therapy that day for 6 weeks. Danny

Oh... Danny ~

That sounds painful ...

This whole physical episode in your life, must be a struggle on many levels.
Manipulating scar tissues sounds so painful. I cringed while reading that.

I really wish you the best in this next operation and your healing.

Danny,
I'd ask him if this new procedure is gonna get you to the finishline faster...
I see his point about breaking it free from the scar tissue that's keeping it bound...
I've had scar tissue bind me up before, but eventually the range did come back but it took time...
Stay focused on the finishline.

Thanks Steve & Dean. My Physical Therapist was getting frustrated with my progress or lack of but didn't send in a report to the surgeon until the day of my appointment with the PA. I was spending 1 1/2 hours in the AM & PM including 3 times a week at the PT place and it's just too bound up. I'm only able to lift my arm unassisted at 90 deg to my body. I have a rope and pulley that I pull it up after a warm up but can't do it unassisted. It wakes me up to 15 times a night but usually only about 10 times, just not the quality sleep I need :SH . I have to sleep sitting up with an ice pack in the wee hours of the morning for relief. There is a rule of sorts that whatever range of motion you obtain in 10 weeks that's all your going to get and I'm in that 10th week so I have no choice but to have the surgeon arm wrestle me. I have no idea how painful it will be afterwards but this range of motion is too much of a handicap for me. :) Danny

Hey Danny.
Sorry to hear about the relapse :( . I thought you'd gotten a return to work ticket...
Norma went though a bout of something called Frozen Shoulder a couple years ago. It was something... she had to do the PT and basically wait it out.

Before we met, she had it isn the other shoulder

Anyway, good luck with the procedure & let us know if we can do anything for you.

Danny,
Sorry to hear your healing after the surgery didn't go as hoped. :(
Hopefully your next surgery will do the trick. :worship:

It sure is frustrating to go to all that PT & not get results. I dislocated my elbow just over 1 1/2 years ago and ended up doing 5 months of PT plus having to wear a spring loaded brace at night ( 8 to 10 hours) for continual stretching which you slowly increase the tension for just over 2 months. The brace made a big difference otherwise at home it was like I was stretching a rubber band in that I could get it stretch when heated with weights to some degree, but as soon as I quite in 5 minutes it was gone. I also ended up with some nerve damage (ulnar nerve, tip of elbow - funny bone) which didn't help because if PT or I did too much it set the nerve off. Fortunately today I have enough mobility to do all the everyday stuff and unless I try to go too straight or too bent for too long, my nerve doesn't bother me.

Getting over injuries can be a long frustrating painful process. You have my sympathy & best wishes in completing your recovery.
Hang in there & hopefully the new surgery will aid the PT so you get the results you need.
Martha ;)

Thanks for all the well wishes Dean, Jim, Eunice, Paul & Martha :D . With this much of a support group this next procedure has got to work and put me back to normal daily activities and work. Yes, I miss working and the income it brings. Jane has been working extra shifts to help make up the loss of my income since there is no disability or unemployment for this self-employed Cabinetmaker and we are doing just fine. Got to get the tear back together before Thursday since Jane misses sleeping in it, got to keep her happy. :D Danny

Danny,

I've done similar procedures to many of my patients over the past 20 years. Since your PT has not been effective the past 9 weeks you should welcome the procedure because not doing so will leave you with a permanently frozen shoulder. Many of my patients report that they had less pain immediately following the manipulation than during the repeated PT sessions and their shoulder mobility and strength quickly improved dramatically. I know it sounds painful but it is not since you will be under anesthesia. You may have pain after (many people do not) but it should dissipate within days and the improved function will be very encouraging.
