City Code Enforcement Gone Wild!!

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby martha24 » Sun Sep 23, 2007 3:28 pm

Goes to show there are a lot of nutty politicians making a lot of nutty laws all over this country. :?

That's one of reasons I was sorry to see Goleta made a city a few years back. There are a number of factions around here that don't agree, so to get city hood passed the people behind the ballot measure only put areas that had voted yes before in & the others were out. That made it a smaller city of which I'm barely in the city limits. They also left the small community around the college (UCSB) out or there was no way city hood would have passed. Most people around here don't want college students having too much power.
On the last city council there was only one who had any common sense. The rest of them were more interested in creating a city in the image that they thought a city should be even at the risk of law suits & the state rejecting the city general plan :? or what many in the city thought. Fortunately at the last election people had had enough of them & throw all those up for election out.

Seems like there are too many politicians who say whatever to get elected and afterward just do as they please.

Brick, at least in CA a vehicle can for a small fee to DMV be registered as non operational. Then it just can't be parked on the street. That's just ridiculous to have to have full tags & insurance on cars that aren't running.

Did you mean to say GA instead of CA?

Because Brick's experience is the norm, not the exception:

They do this to assure that only registered and insured vehicles are allowed to "live."

Yeah, you can tell the powers that be that you're not driving it, but a lot of people still do. So the innocent have to pay the price for the actions of the guilty.

By the way:

You can still by an assault weapon down here in Florida with almost no questions asked.

HAH! GOT YOU HERE YOU GUN NUTS!

Parking on grass is a major problem in this counrty that has to be stamped out. But everyone and their mother owning lethal weapons isn't.
Here we go again!

I mean California...that's were I live. If it is registered as non operational, then no tags are given, but it is kept in the computer & you won't be penalized when you want to register as an operational vehicle. If your caught driving a vehicle with expired tags then you will be fined, ticketed etc.

I wouldn't have a clue how other states do it.

I love how the media loves to throw "AK-47" all over the place. No matter what type of weapon it is, any assualt (looking) weapon is automatically called an "AK-47".

I think a hijack took place. :o
This thread wasn't about guns. There is another thread on guns for anyone who wants to discuss that topic.

I find City Code Enforcement Gone Wild!! more interesting. :R

The guns tread was pulled. It was good too.

I guess gun talk is just too politically incorrect.

Guns... are kinda like religion, politics, abortion, gay rights and a few other subjects...
They're just another one of those topics that people usually have strong opinions about,
that may be better left to other forums? I kinda like the easy going family friendly atmosphere
around here the way it is. It just could make the wrong first impression on some visitors?
Not a bad call... and I have nothing against guns. JMHO

Luckily (or unluckily) we are outside the city on county land. We do have an HOA but they aren't much, what do you expect when the dues are $25/year. They are pretty much only there in case someone tries to bully the neighborhood instead of policing the HOA rules. Of course, there has been an overly egar board member here and there.

I've had the tear parked on the driveway since Minden. I usually keep it in the garage but the garage is undergoing an overhaul (cleaning). I haven't had a letter from the HOA about the trailer. Watch, I just jinxed myself and I'll get one this week.

Posted: Thu Sep 20, 2007 10:56 am Post subject: City Code Enforcement Gone Wild!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A friend called me yesterday to tell me that his brother had been carted off to jail He was stopped for an expired inspection sticker and the police ran his license. It turned out that the city had a warrant out for his arrest for having trash in his backyard. He was shocked because he had not received any prior notice (That part of the story was familar to me because - read on!) and he did not have trash in his back yard.

The man is old and has a bad back. The police had to help the guy out of his car and help him into the police car. He was taken to jail, but the did not keep him over night because he complained that he didn't have his back medicine with him and was in pain!

This past spring, I (and 100's others with various code violations) was halled off to court for parking my car on my grass in my back yard. I expressed to the city attorney that I took issue with the bogus claims on my docket that said that they had summoned me to court twice and that I did not show up. I hadn't recieved any such notices and if I had, I would not have ignored them since they threatened to fine me $500 and put a warrant out for my arrest. I said that I would not sacrafice my freedom for parking my car on my grass, and that I took issue that they would threated my freedom for such an issue. I told her that I was just grateful to God that I had not been picked up. I wouldn't have even known why. She said that the warrant part didn't really mean anything since that statement goes on all court notices. Citizens are now noticing that her words are not true. I ended up having to pay a $304 fine for parking on my grass in my yard because of pictures that code enforcement took while standing in my yard.

This is ironic since the city has used tax payers' money to build a pavillion for day laborers to sit under while they wait for people to come by and solite workers. Many of these people are not paying taxes on their wages. That's illegal, yet the police don't arrest them, just the tax payers.

Keep a watchful eye on what your City Council is voting on; this could happen to you!

Same here too. FYI also in our counties in rural areas.

They hired more code people and judges for code enforcement.

I have always wanted to move because of the weather here but I have been shocked and distrubed by things I have read on this thread. I think I will stay put. No one cares what I have parked on my grass or in my driveway.

One good thing about Az. Most places don't have lawns to park on...

I just had this same experience just last week. I was written up for having a 24' trailer parked on the side of my house on the grass. It "has" to be on concrete or asphalt. I have 14 days to comply or ask for an extension.

Up one block is this lot that had trailers for rent. This is in the rear half of a house lot. Look close at the pics below and you can see there is no concrete or asphalt under any of those trailers and that is only half of what he stores there. Now why can he park 30-40 trailers and I can't park one on dirt or grass? So far, Code Enforcement has NOT called me back. Big surprise!

I think these city officials go to conferences and learn these "fund raising" schemes and rush back home to implement them w/o thinking the whole thing through.
