Are you overweight?

Postby MSG Hall » Thu Oct 04, 2007 7:51 am

I was having a weight discussion with some of my troops; they were teasing me about my weight…

It got me thinking though… I have gained about 50lbs in the last 20 years, that’s 2.5lbs per/year…

I am at the edge of Army’s weight standard, though I have never gone over. I am 5’6” and weigh about 200lbs… but I can run all day, literally and do a hundred or so pushups at a time… it should also be noted that I broke my back and cracked a hip 1997, being laid up and the steroid treatments put a lot of the weight on and I have never been able to loose it… You can see a recent picture of me to the left.

So without divulging to much of your own info… what it the “normal” weight gain per year in the civilian world? From age 20 to now, how much have you gained per year?

This is just a curiosity…

Hope this does not bore anyone, but I weighed 185 getting out of high school, joined the US Navy, weighed 195 getting out of boot camp. They just thought it was tuff...they should have worked on my Dad's produce packing shed! Anyway, maintained that weight until I got married, and then it's been up hill since then to 235 now. However, I've been married since 1971. It goes on so easy without me even knowing it, but it sure is hard to take off! :(

my high was 220.. ironically, i weighed 218 and gained the 2 pounds just to get to my goal... I then dropped to 210, then 200, and am now 193.. for 6-2, my 'ideal weight' is 188....

But, as mentioned above, weak stomach muscles put the bulges in places they should not be.... but at 67 with a bum back, I figure I'm doing reasonably well..

I too, can walk all day.. as long as the day is 2 hours long../g/.

ok. hope you're not eating. I went from 125 (5'1") in 1985 to a high of 245 in 2005 for an average of 6 pounds/year. On the up side, since the divorce in 2006 I've lost 15 of it without even trying.

Two things- Fat gain and muscle loss.

At 25 I weighed about 145. I had the legs of someone who spent the past 10 years hiking, skiing, and cycling hundreds of days each year. I also had the upper body of someone who didn't work out above the waist- scrawny. Probably body fat content was in the single digits. I had to buy pants to fit my quads and always needed a belt to keep the waist up.

Got married and started adding weight, but also joined a gym and added upper body muscle mass- at 35 I weighed 175 of which I think about 15 pounds was added muscle and 15 was added fat.

Then we had kids. I don't get any formal exercise and still weigh about 175, but I would guess that in the last seven years I've probably dropped a good ten pounds of muscle and replaced it with fat. If that's all true in 17 years I've added about 25 pounds of fat.

I'm just shy of 5'10". I really want to get back into the shape I was at 35, which means dropping 10 pounds of fat and gaining 10 of muscle.

So without divulging to much of your own info… what it the “normal”
weight gain per year in the civilian world? From age 20 to now, how much
have you gained per year?

"To determine the weight of the “average”
American
, weight data from the Center for Disease Control and
Prevention[1] was analyzed.

This data indicated that men and women had a combined average weight
of 167.2 lbs by 1994, and this average grew to 176.4 pounds by 2002.
Assuming a steady linear trend of weight gain over time, Americans
appeared to have gained an average of 1.15 pounds per year from
1994 to 2002.

The average adult American weight at the beginning of 2006 was calculated
by multiplying the 1.15 pounds per year of weight gain by three years
(2003, 2004, and 2005) and adding it to the 2002 average weight. Given
this extrapolation, the approximate average adult American weight at the
beginning of 2006 was calculated to be 179.85 pounds."

One thing I do (aside from swimming), is I took up geocaching. It involves walking, sometimes up to 2 miles (sometimes only 50 feet)... always in different places and I find new and interesting things almost each time... one thing is, there is no refrigerator, ice cream or oreo cookies when I'm doing it. And, new experiences.... such as:

For instance, how many times have you been annoyed by school buses cluttering up the road? Yesterday, I exacted my revenge, unintentionally.

I did a geocache which put me on a road which T'd into another with no outlet. One leg of the T was only about 50 feet long the other way about 1/4 mile, so we with 2 cars parked there.. no houses, not in anyone's way...

Well, we found the cache, and when we got back to the cars, and there was a school bus. He/she used the T to turn around and go back out to civilization... for the first time in my life, a school bus had to wait for me... what a nice feeling.

I hope Grant won't harbor any hard feelings.. it was not in his state.

But, geocaching is fun and many families do it together....

I'm just rolling in laughter with this thread, but figured I should tell something about myself to all you nice people.

I am so average, I'm boring! at 6 foot in High school I weighed 190. Now 34 years later, I'm only 5-11 and weight 215, The wife's goal for me is to weigh 190, but she is too good of a cook and I don't want to insult her by not eating everything she puts on the table, or in my lap when we are glued to the TV.

I figure I calculate pounds per married years equals about 1/year. By the time I die I should weigh a lot more.

I'm 5'5" and 52. I'm the thinnest I've been in my adult life at 122-125. But I probably don't carry as much muscle as I used to, despite the cycling time.

Man!!! what a thread. I'm 5'8" and right out of high school (38 years ago) I weighed 145#. Today I'm still 5'8" and weigh in at 170#. My wife has been feeding me good for 37 years but I'm one of those small time building contractors that actually owns a tool belt and uses it almost every day. If I worked in an office I'd probably tip the scales at 200#+. If I keep working until I'm 80 then maybe I can stay relatively trim.
