Window Cutouts into a Folding Table

Postby Classic Finn » Thu Dec 27, 2007 6:20 pm

Im doing some small work for the Voyager inside since the weather is just terrible outside.

I have the 2 Camp Inn window cut outs here and I was thinking that Id make a folding table out of them since they are a nice aluminum on one side and Mahogany on the other and there is no sense in throwing them away so here Im going to make a table out of them.

What would be the best way in joining them together? By a means of a short piano hinge or just a couple of small door hinges?

I will take and add the aluminum trim around the outside diameters and revarnish the mahogany on it also..

I think it will look good. Here is a photo of the Mahogany Side - Unfinished though. It needs to be sanded and shaped a bit.

And the Aluminum Side with plastic yet..

My vote is for the short piano hinge - provides a cleaner unbroken look and makes the two halves booked

Heikki,

I have a question: Where are you going to use the tables and is it going to be free-standing?

My concern about the hinge thing is that you need to add support to the bottom so that when it is unfolded you, it won't go past 180 degrees.

What you could do is make each into its own table with folding legs so that you and your wife(could not remember how to spell her name) could each have your own table to be used with the folding recliner chair.

It will be used on the outside mounted onto the wall with the special hangar. I was thinking more of have one folding adjustable leg.

Its not really big enough for 2 tables seperately.

Heikki, are you going to square up the two cut outs? If you are going to I would take small progressive cuts from one edge to the other until you end up with straight parallel edges. To square up the short edges you'll need a home built table saw sled. If you need a picture of one I'll take one for you. They are real handy in the shop. :D Danny

Sure you can take a pic as I dont quite understand but I,ll square the inside edges and leave the outside radius on.

I agree. I think a short piano hinge would work the best.
