Introduction and Question

Postby sonar37 » Sun Jan 06, 2008 2:57 pm

Hello all. We are soon to be joining the ranks of TD owners!
:)
We are seriously considering the purchase of a 2007 Little Traveler Amish built trailer from Pleasant Valley Trailers in Sugar Creek, Ohio. We have been in contact with Keith Horton and the many positive postings on this forum concerning your dealings with him help to secure the fact that we are dealing with an honest, forthwright dealer who has our best interest at heart.

We live in Northern Michigan so the trip will be about 8 hours for us to pick our trailer up. Here's our question/concern: We are looking at the 5 x 8 Little Traveler model and are stressing over the fact that some say we can pull it behind our 2007 Chevy Mailbu LS, (3500 V6 cylinder engine) with no problems and some say not to attempt it. (Trailer dry weight = 960 lbs and towing capacity of Malibu = 1000lbs.)

Have any of you had experiences with the Little Traveler model and what are your thoughts about pulling it with the Malibu? We've read that many of you pull these teardrops with smaller cars and since we don't have the funding for a larger vehicle at this time, we are seriously considering adding the hitch to the Malibu...but with a bit of hesitation. Can anyone offer some advice or experience in this matter?

Thanks so much.

Welcome to the forum.

I built my TD and dry weight is 820 lbs. and I pull it with a Toyota Corolla 1.8 lt. engine. I have pulled it about 15,000 miles with no problems going over 11,300 ft. mountain passes in Colorado. Good luck and Enjoy.

If it helps, we have a Lil Guy, a Hunter 4x10, and a Yoder Toter 4x8 and we pull them with MINI Coopers. Our son bought the Yoder Toter from Keith. We have no problems what so ever in pulling them, in the mountains or on flat ground. I hope this gives you some idea as to what you can pull. Some of the guys will get back to you and be of more help.

Welcome!

Image to the playground Rob and MJ. First the weight of the TD you are getting is dry weight. Once you load it, it will be heavier. Now since the Malibu is big enough to pull the td perhaps the brakes won't stop it.... that would be my biggest fear....

You might ask your dealer why the low tow rate.

Enjoy the site and please share :pictures: :pictures: :pictures:

Welcome... you'll love it here !!!

I have a home built 5x8 and guessing weight full w/ ice chest, stove, chairs, etc is probably 850-900.

I towed it about 8 times last year with my 2001 Honda Accord 4 cyl. automatic. I did have a transmission cooler added to it about a year ago, since I'm already at 140K miles and don't want a car payment anytime soon , or the purchase of a new tranny.

I can do 70 - 75 mph easily and usually get around 20 mpg. Just have to remember to downshift on some hills.

Go for it ! If you are having the hitch professionally installed have a transmission cooler installed at the same time (if you have an automatic transmission.)

This small extra investment will possible save you a $2500.00 transmission failure and will definatly extend the life of the transmission. Whether you are towing or not , a transmission service every 2 years is a cheap way to avoid transmission troubles.
Growing older but not up !

just try it and if it feels too heavy on the tow car then think about swopping the car. My tow car has a 998cc four cylinder 33 bhp engine and 4 tiny drum brakes and I`m getting a bit worried, yours should be fine 8)
