It’s an easy thing to say and it’s even an easy thing to do. But the living with it after, that’s what’s hard. Excellent advise. Wish more people had that frame of mind.btw, bruce (I hope I can call you Bruce) I 'm sure I speak for most here, you are in our thoughts and stay SAFE

Go and get your self a musket, I think that was the gun available at the time the second amendment was written. No one will care.

Well, considering this data.....

...half the old fogies on this board should be more concerned about carrying this...

http://www.lifealert.com/index.html

...being out in the boondocks and all. And if they do run into anything or anyone scary enough to use a gun, they'll probably need both!

The other half of the board members are young enough to run like hell! And its generally bad practice to try to shoot behind you while running through a wooded area!

For the most part, camping, hiking, and most outdoor activities are very safe, however..... There are deranged people in this world - chances of running into one are remote but it happens.....

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,321107,00.html

I understand not everyone believes they need to have a firearm. And, it is my belief most should not have one unless they take the time to get proper education with a gun, and practice with it including all the safety that must be top of mind while having one. But the second amendment is there for our individual right to self defense. That is the great thing about this country. If you feel you should not carry one.... don't, I would be the last one to try to talk you into it.

BTW - If you are interested.... DC, Illinois, and Wisconsin do not issue concealed carry permits. All other states do with the exception of Vermont which allows you to carry open in public (concealed carry not needed). Even California allows concealed carry. Here is the list online, but be sure to read your individual states laws - most are available online. http://www.ccrkba.org/reciprocity.html Be sure to read the website disclaimers before you decide to carry.

Make your own informed decision.... that is your right.

IMHO a Ruger 10-22 is one of the finest rifles ever made, simple, rugged and easy to use. Besides, the 22 and the 12 ga shotgun are the most versatile ammunition ever made.

As for carrying one while camping, I have one of each in Dogtown, have carried one or the other on canoe trips and whenever boonie busting in general. I've never needed them, but I've never needed that fishing tackle that I also carry. Nevertheless, they have come in handy providing a little meat to sweeten the pot. And for that reason alone, I'll continue to carry them wherever I go.

As for personal protection, when we moved to Cincinnati 25 years ago we decided to move to the inner city and as a result my wife took a personal protection class from a retired cop. It was his opinion, if one felt the need for a firearm for protection, the best was a 12 ga pump loaded with birdshot. They are easy to use and effectively control anything within 10 yards while not creating an undue hazard (other than the noise) outside that range. Moreover, anyone who will potentially present a threat recognizes a 12 ga pump jack and will cede to that warning alone.

Of course we all recognize that we are more likely to get killed in an auto accident driving to the outdoor activity than by someone we need to defend ourself against.
We do have restricted rights to own a firearm however if I find someone flashing a gun around a campground I believe I would encourage the proper local authority to check to make sure they were legal.

The "don't ask....don't tell" option works for me :MLAS , but I will mention that I am a big Ruger fan. I like "wheel-guns" and the 22's are great fun as well as cheap to target shoot. The 357's work on almost anything except bears. Of course, I don't really want to get within range of a bear. It's the only critter out there that scares me!!

Guns do kill people, but so does a Buick...I wouldn't recommend the car as a self-defense medium.

I agree Jim, if they are flashing a gun, that's called brandishing and is illegal. The whole idea behind a concealed carry permit is it is concealed.

Concerning the auto accident - you are right again. In fact if the auto accident doesn't kill you, I read that you are 9000 times more likely to be killed accidentally by a doctor treating you then a firearms accident.

Each state is a little different, some consider an rv an extension of your home, others don't. Even laws on how to carry in a car vary. The laws for the states you will drive through should be researched before you leave on the trip and decide to bring a firearm. Also, state parks vary as well. In Georgia for instance, a state park is off limits for a concealed firearm (exceptions for hunting guns during hunting season), but Florida just passed laws to allow carry in parks (so I have been told) due to several recent killings of people visiting parks. The old law made them defenseless in the state park - the new one would give one the opportunity to defend against an attacker (animal or person).

Anyone who thinks they will protect themselves with a concealed weapon has some kind of a brain deformity. It just aint gona happen. Also when you are breaking the law by carrying a concealed weapon, don't cry about what laws others choose to ignore. You can't have it both ways.

Ya know, that's pretty damn ignorant. I'm also curious as to how you justify that and where you got your information, since you obviously seem to be an authority.

I was going to stay out of this but belittling someone because they chose to legally carry a firearm is mean and just shows what a small person you are.

Carrying concealed is NOT against the law if you have a license. As my friend Earl Pitts used to say, "Wake up America!"

Quite so, and most colonies required their male citizens to own one, along with varying amounts of ammunition and a bayonet. What many people overlook is that was the "assault weapon" of its day - the 18th c. equivalent of the fully automatic M16. The framers intended that the citizens be as well-equipped as any army.
