Gas/diesel

Postby Oregonian » Fri Mar 14, 2008 10:19 pm

Here in La Pine Or, Wed the 12th at Gordy's truck stop, it was 3.68 for reg  gas, and 3.88 for diesel, :crying2: don't know what it is today. Looks like we are in for an expensive fuel summer. :( I have both and was going to use them this summer, but maybe will have to walk.

Another bad part of the whole situation as I see it that our wages aren't going up any because with the rising price of everything else, our employers(ok maybe just mine)can't (or won't)justify raises. If I stay at my current job I will rally for 4 ten hour workdays(on a 40 hour week we currently work 4 nine hour and one 4 hour day). The company has about 80 employees, and about 75 percent of them drive 10-40 miles to work one way. I'm sure that the company would never go for it, but its worth a try.
If I could shut my brain off, I could save myself alot of time, money and effort.

Aaron, I've been on a campaign to get our elected officials to come up with a "computer act" that would ask (require) employers to let people (who have the means) to work from home. This would save enormous amounts aof gas and help cut in to the dependence and demand for gas.

I have had very little excitement from the senators that I have e-mailed.
I have even re-written and resent my suggestion. No responses received.

I still can't beleive that a telecommuter act can't be initiated but there is not much excitement in Washington.

I could save tons of money ($16.00 per day) if this was to be imposed.

Oh well, I guess I'll have to retire before it gets too expensive to work.

I think it is a great idea. I know businesses will resist it, because they hate government mandates (even when they make sense and can improve profits), but there are a lot of jobs these days that can be done from a home office.

I used to go to the magazine every day as an employee. Now, I do the same exact job as a contractor, and work from my home. The publisher isn't real happy, since I can't be close by for him to dump his work onto, but the magazine goes out, and I don't drive a 50 mile round trip every day. Plus, I can do more work on the side, and make more money.

Anyway, I think you are right on the money about telecommuting. But, it is going to be a hard fight to get big business, and conservatives, to go for it. Good luck.

CD , thanks for the vote of confidence,. The first Senator that I wrote to was Evan Byah (IN D). He (or his staff ) had no idea what I was referring to and the reponse proved it. There was no response at all to my follow up.
As for the conservatives not liking it, I think it goes a little further. I think there must be insurance related issues with Home employment.

I don't care who decides to initiate it, they will be a "Hero" (in my opinion) and votes will come their way for being so "modern" in their approach. It just makes too much sense , I guess.

Oh well, well keep trying.

I just picked up the current issue of Diesel Power Magazine. Apparently the auto manufacturers are finally bringing diesel powered stuff to the states. They didn't mention VW at all, but they did mention Audi, BMW, Dodge, Ford, Honda, Jeep, Land Rover, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Saturn and Toyota.

My favorite was the Jeep Renegade Bluetec which gets 110 MPG. I don't know if it'll tow a trailer though... I did manage to find this on the web...

Mike, that's really nice. Now you need to style a Teardrop to go with it.

Kurt,

I can style a teardrop like that, but can anyone build it? We'd probably be talking foam, covered with fiberglass.

I have driven the Grand Cherokee Diesel -- took it to a gathering, in fact. A Wrangler with that engine would be awesome. I'd buy one.

I am still a little biased in favor of VW. I may get Chell the Tiguan Diesel when it's time to replace the Equinox. I anticipate fuel economy in the 38 MPG range... but I've not seen any hard numbers yet... Plus I don't know what the towing capacity is... (It has to be able to tow the Giant Teardrop!)

I'll be waiting for the pics of your new vehicle in 2 weeks. Since coming to this site, I think you've had Blazer?, Jetta, Passat, Ponitac....am I missing any?
