My dilemna

Postby Aaron Coffee » Thu Mar 20, 2008 5:46 pm

Sounds pretty promising for the job I applied for. But have been changing my mind about every 5 minutes. The new job would mean moving about 50 miles away(with the price of gas driving would be out of the question), to a state that has a state income tax(South Dakota doesn't have state income tax). About $1 cut in pay to start, but the long term possibilty of higher pay than I will probably ever have at my current job. The new job would put my current projects on hold, these include getting the engine rebuilt and back in my 67 Dodge Dart convertible, and most importantly building teardrop #2. The new job would be far less phyical work, longer hours and working one weekend a month. Have been at my current job for 10 years and hate to give up 4 weeks of vacation and have to start all over at the bottom. The new place called my current employer today and boy did that stir up a hornets nest(anybody in the know was walking on eggshells around me this afternoon, kind of feels good to be feared), so maybe they will listen to me to make things better(also more productive). Might of PO'd the new place though cause I inadvertantly put my home phione number instead of my work number(one time I called in sick and couldn't figure out why the phone was busy, took three times to figure out I was dialing my home number).

In reading my post I think I already have my mind made up. Looks like #2 is a go.
Done venting now, and feel better.
Thanks

 8) You make a good counselor Aaron. Not many people can do that for themselves. ;)

Taxes being what they are, not having them would be like having a built in raise every year.

My tag line says it all, I think too much. At times I envy my brothers they can walk off one job and into another with no thought at all, but me I weigh the pros and cons and try to think through possible scenerios. Another point for staying where I'm at is I already have a small South Dakota flag for my teardrop. And car license is a lot higher in Iowa, too. See what I mean, there I go thinking again!

Aaron,

We always think things are better on the other side of the fence. The longer hours will be agravated by the longer drive and working one weekend a month always seems to hit at the wrong time. You lose a weeks vacation and the state income tax, comes out to how much? Figure in your gas mileage and cost per year. How about insurances both at work and automobile since they won't like you driving that far. Add all of your costs up per year at the new place and where your at now and divide by 2080 (your average hours worked in a year) and compare. I recently moved to Kansas from MI. and although I have a good job in which I sit at a desk now. I gained about 40lbs in two years, type 2 diabetes, can't seem to lose weight and even though I'm paid salary now more than before, my old management job allowed me to choose hourly and without the overtime, I made almost $20K less this year. I should have stayed put (Oh, we also lost $25K on our house and was lucky to sell it, closed all of my 401K's just to make it here in KS.) I can't stress it enough, count the costs in every way you can think. This may even be an opportunity to talk to your present employer about a small raise (providing they want to keep you onboard). Good luck. $>
Why hasn't anyone found a dead bigfoot? When was the last time you found a dead deer, bear, coyote, fox, squirrel, etc. that died in the woods.........Hmmm.

Sometimes it helps the morale just knowing you can move, that others are interested in you. It is also a great time to have a frank talk with the present employer and maybe gain a bit more in the paycheck. Experienced workers are tough/expensive to replace and a good conversation with you present employer might cement your direction and commitment to oneanother.

Save some of that vacation and drive across IA to a gathering in Sept.

Good Luck.

I think I have earned pot stirrer status at my current job, because they have been having meetings about me for 2 days. And it sounds like they are going to work to improve things. I got a message that the other company is offering me a job but I think I'm going to stay where I'm at. Besides the biggest tradeoff would have been postponing the build of #2.
The morale works both ways, too. I feel better knowing I have a saleable skill, and my current employer knows that now. Funny the last two days the owners kids have been giving me wide birth. Almost would be fun to yell "boo" and see how quick they run.

Bodyman,
Where about in Iowa are you located?
