My toungue jack is....

very hard to turn up or down. The trailer has been sitting for almost two tears during construction, so it hasn't been used much. Anybody got any advice on how to grease it? Do I just grease the shaft or do I have to take the thing apart? And if so....how???

Mine has a grease zerk, is there a cap on top you can take off. If not your only option is to spray some WD-40 or other thru the crank handle.

Thanks Emiller, I'll try that. It looks Like I can remove the handle, but don't know if it comes apart. It's welded on the frame.... don't really want to try to replace it.

John if you do have to replace it, buy one the same and just take off the lock ring and put the new one on. No cutting or welding.

Well really I was serious. Try gently knocking it to rattle "stuff" loose. Then spray some junk on it.

Well..I can tell you this from the frozen North, rainy, ocean salt environment...lot's of people pop the plastic cap off the top of the jack and pack it with bearing grease...others just put a bucket over the top of the jack to keep the weather out. This is a pet peave with me...on my big boat, it seemed like I was changing jacks about every year or two!!!

You have a top wind bulldog tongue jack don't you? Best bet is have Mary crank on it a while to loosen it up so you can turn it.

About the only way to oil those jacks is to pour some oil down along the handle shaft, it's messy but it does work, dribble it in there until it loosens up then put a little more in, it'll run down around the threads. Also if you screw it out as far as it will go you can rub a layer of grease on the tube and run it back in, that'll help keep it from rusting in there.

The dribble method worked for me. I took an old innertube ands cut out a section. Worked down over the crown of the jack and fastened it with a radiator type worm clamp. pulled it up and filled it with a quart if cheap off brand automatic transmission fluid. Folded over the end and put a spring clamp on it. Took a day or two for all of it to leak down into a pan I placed under the jack but it worked slick as can be after about 5 minutes of running it up and down. Very little mess and just rag wipe and your ready.

Try using warm cooking oil or cold diesel, I unsiezed an engine by filling the bores with diesel, but cooking oil is supposed to work.
