Canine Joint Suppliments

Postby TPMcGinty » Fri May 16, 2008 6:07 pm

Anybody have any recommendations for some dog joint suppliments? My dog has been so sore the past couple of days that he is walking around on three legs. He must have injured the front left leg in the past (before I adopted him) because that is the one the stiffens up.

Tim,

How old is your dog?

Have you ever researched raw meaty bones? It might help...

He's an 11 year old yellow lab. In doing research on the internet I found out that 80% of labs get arthritis when they get older. Nope I haven't checked out raw meaty bones. I will look at it. Thanks for the help.

Did you know you can give him Aspirin?

One of my dogs was having hip problems a few weeks ago. Not sure if something bit her. She had fever at the end of her spine and beginning of her tail. Did a search for dog pain medicine and found chart for dosage.
It definately helped.

Hmmm... I would research enzymes to see if they might help an older Lab... enzymes are noted for reducing inflammation.

I would also research some pain relief stuff, like Linda suggested.

Thanks for the suggestion. I give him asprin when he gets sore and it does help. But when he gets real bad it doesn't get rid of the limp, it just makes it better than it was. I was trying to figure out if there is a suppliment that can help prevent him from getting arthritis pain in the first place.

Tim,

We have a 15 yr old dog that has joint pain in her hips and back legs. Our vet recommended over the counter Glucosamine & Chondroitin. So me and the dog share my pills. The dog gets 13 -15 mg of the chondroitin compound per every kilogram of dog weight once daily. After 4 -6 weeks as improvement shows reduce the dosage by half. Last winter our dog couldn't take a walk because it was too painful. Now she occasionally jumps around like a puppy.

How's that? 8)

If you try aspirin...check with your vet first. It has to be buffered aspirin. It doesn't work as well as doggie anti-inflammatory meds would work because buffered aspirin isn't processed through the kidneys as well.

Past a few days of rest if your pooch is still that sore it's worth a vet visit.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm looking at glucosamine suppliments but I wasn't sure if some are better than others.

I did talk to the vet about this in the past. She recommended asprin but if it didn't help I would have to put him on a perscription medication. In the past it has gotten better in a few days. If it doesn't he will visit the vet. (He LOVES the vet!) I just want to find something that will help prevent this in the future.

...when our doggie thru her hip out, the vet recommended a half a advil for the pain...I know they have glucosimine for doggies..an appropriate dosage such as Steve suggested of the human stuf should be just the ticket for a doggie with arther........

I second that. When I worked at the kennel, I remember a lot of older dogs getting their glucosamine pills with their dinner.

Thanks Madjack and Swiss Army Girl. I think I will get some glucosamine for him. From what I read about Ibuprofin it is safe for dogs as long as you don't give them too much. If you give them too much it can be very bad, so I think I will stick with the asprin and try some glucosamine. My other issue is he has other medical issues that require him to be on other medications. I don't want any weird side affects due to giving him something that might interact with one of his other meds. The Vet OKed Asprin and I'm pretty sure glucosamine will be OK since he gets some of it in his food already.

Tim, I have a black Lab and she just went through her second operation on her rear knees. the Vet Doctor sujected if I had some 80mg baby asprin, the size that is recommended for older people against heart attacks, that would take some of the pain away and let her walk on all fours, this was before the operations. She is two weeks along after the second one and seems to be doing well. Still give her a baby asprin once a day, and I think that it is helping. She will be going on five more gatherings this year and one is coming up next week, so I will find out how she gets along beings it is so soon.
Hope this helps.

Baby aspirin works well. I just dug some out for a lady here at the Pismo rally. For chronic knee pains, Costco used to have a powdered condrotin/glusomine that I put on the dogs food. I think it helped but time may have cured on its own.
