The "Simple"

Postby cowboy63645 » Mon Jun 02, 2008 9:27 am

I have been looking for plans to build my first, yes....my FIRST trailer for my family and I. I was looking at the Simple design and really like it, due to the fact that it has enough space for me, my wife and my 3 kids. Does anyone have any pictures of the finished product of one of these trailers?

I have a idea in mind, but dont have the know how to put it on the computer lol. If anyone has any pictures or any information on how they did their's it would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks and awesome site!!

There's something wrong here - or else there are two trailer designs called 'Simple'. The Simple in the Design Library is 8ft long by 4ft wide by 4ft high - you and your wife will fit (tightly), and you could get one small child in a bunk if you left out the interior cabinets, but 3 kids? Nope.

If it is the Simple in the Design Library you're interested in, I had put up some photos of Nike and Sheri's example in my Hall of Fame - but then forgot to upload the new page to my web site. That's now fixed, so go to Simple photos or look at the Rimple photos on the same page as it's the same trailer but with rounded corners.

Our trailer is made two fit a queen size bed and three kids in bunks with cabinets and a fairly large galley. But you need to build bigger then the "simple" Ours is 5' x 12' x 5' and we are making a cot system to fit the kids above us. I'm not done with mine yet but at least you can see some pics of ours. Take a look at my album.

Hope this helps, and here is the link for the cot system for the kids.

Andrew,

You need to convert your 2+2 into a 2+3 and make it look like the simple...

Meanwhile, here's an idea that might work for cowboy...

sorry for the confusion....my "goal" for using the Simple design to build a slightly larger trailer than what those particular plans call for. I was just going to use the same basic exterior design. I am sorry for the confusion and I appreciate ya'll's responces. Anything and everything at this point is helpful, as I am only in the drawing and planning phase. If anyone has an idea as to what would work better as far a larger trailer, or a better floor plan that would accomidate all of us. My kids are 6 years old, 20 months old, and 3 months old, so all of the kids camping with us in the near futur isnt likely lol. Thanks again ya'll and excellent site!!

Mine is pretty much a "Simple" but built 5 x 8 and a bit higher at 4' 9" for more interior headroom. If I did it again I'd go a couple of inches wider to fully cover the fenders and provide a bit more interior/storage space.

I will be building a 6' x 10'....I will be mounting it on a 16' utility trailer. The reason I am doing this as my wife and I are avid off roaders, and it would be a good way for us to have a camper and load our ATV's on the back. When the ATV's arent on there we can set up a canopy and use the back as a deck. Also, I am wanting to mount the door on the rear of the camper instead of on the side, hence the reason I am wanting to use the same basic shape, not not the complete design. I have an idea in my head and when I get it drawn up I will post pics. I will definatly want feedback on all this wh nI am done lol.

Sounds to me like the Campster 12 would suit you fine. It's actually only got 2 children's bunks but you've got a lot of years to go before you can't fit 2 of yours top'n'toe in one bunk and you could use the floor to get three full-size bunks.

The design would work slightly better as a Simple-style rectangle with one corner knocked off, as it would give more headroom over the front bunks. If the lowest bunk was dropped to the floor, you might even get three bunks in the front - after all, they are young, flexible and athletic, so they should be able to 'post' themselves into the narrow slots!

So here you are - the Squampster (square Campster):

That's 19" of headroom for each child, including the thickness of the mattress, so about 16" clear - I reckon that's enough, if not exactly generous....

It seems likely to me that all the teardrop builders will decide they need just a little bit more space and so in five years' time it'll be all TTTs. Then someone will say a shower would be nice and five years later, this will be the home-built 30ft double slide-out 5th wheel forum....

With the baby only 3 months it has a long time to be small enough to sleep over mom and dad's feet or in a removable portable bed in the counter area. Perhaps that will give the older kids more room if they end up reading or playing on a rainy day.

You might also look into those bunks dropping for floor space on a bad day. ;)

I was almost thinking, take the middle bunk, keep it attached to the wall, and let the "open" end come down and convert it to bench seeting, and then can fold back up to make the "3 bunks" The very top bunk could also be moveable, in it could hinge upwards towards the ceiling and be latched to give more headroom for whoever is sitting there. Just a thought.
**EDIT** that might not work considering the bottom bunk is sitting on the ground....hmmm I will have to give this a tad bit more thought LOL

 Kids like to sit on the ground. You can also make the middle a table for them
EZ has his bunks dropped to make a similar couch.
