I know half of you try to escape the electronics world when you go camping... this is for the other half...

Does anyone else here play with the EEEPC with plans to take it camping or what not???

I just picked up the Linux version and plan on testing it for suitability.

Mike...

P.S. Chell said, that would be perfect for her for when she is out repairing computers! :o

I own an EEE PC and I took it with me to the Spring Fling in Morton, WA. Unfortunately, there was no WiFi available, so I didn't get much use out of it.

Normally, I take it with me when I go to Caruso's Deli for lunch, and surf the net there.

When I first got the machine, I installed Ubuntu Linux on it. After a while, I decided I was tired of shifting dialogs around, as many of them did not fit on the screen. So I reinstalled Xandros, which is what comes with the machine. I then followed some instructions on an EEE PC forum to install and switch to the normal menuing system. Much better than that beginners thingy.

My EEE PC has 2GB of main memory (Xandros only uses 1GB of it) and I have plugged in an 8GB flash card, for a total of 12GB of storage.

Oh, yeah - mine is black. I like it.

Cool!! I have been wanting one of those since they came out!! I like Linux O/S's and have my laptop set up to dual-boot to XP & Linux.
My issue with the eeePC is whether it will be able to be configured to talk to my Razr to get on the internet. So far with all my screwing around with various forms of Linux I haven't been able to get that to work....and it does work on Windows.
I use Alltel data network for my internet access. Where I live there is no cable or DLS option making the cell phone my only choice for anything faster than dial-up. That's why I have to know if it will work with the Razr phone acting as a "modem"
I see you have the "big dog" 9" model!! You must have just bought it. Isn't it amazing how small they are? And very light..less than 2.5 lbs I believe.
What's your favorite thing about it so far? Any problems so far?

I like the idea, but I'm a Mac guy, so I'm waiting for Apple to come out with their super-cool touch-screen tablet model. Of course, it will cost $2K, but that's the price you pay for style I suppose. :x

The EEE PC is a tiny, cheap laptop... it's part of the project to make a laptop available for everyone, world wide (or something like that) You can read more about it here
http://eeepc.asus.com/global/

The EEE stands for Easy to Learn, Easy to Play, Easy to Work

The most amazing thing I find is that I can waltz into Microcenter (Best Buy) etc, and get the 7" version for $349.

The second most amazing thing is it's size. It's a fraction of the size of my normal laptop. I took a picture of my normal laptop and the EEE PC so you can see what I mean...

Yes MrBuzz, I bought a newer one, with a 9" screen. I bought the Linux version cause it has the 20G SSD. But it looks like Chell has laid claim to it, so I am going to get the 9" black one when it comes out, with the Atom processor.

Dean, I've heard you can download a bootleg copy of Mac OS that will run on a Wintel. I wonder if you could get that to run on an EEE PC? You'd save $1500. :)

My iPhone is even smaller than that, and cost less. ;)

And, there's another computer out there besides the EEE PC that anyone can afford, it goes by the name "USED PC".

Oh, Mike, I am soooo close to the 9" eee PC 900. 4 y.o. Averatec laptop took one power surge too many, Circuit City had a Memorial Day weekend coupon, and I picked up a 12" diagonal screen HP laptop that is much heavier (almost a pound) than advertised. Then I found out about the eee PC 900. I'm seriously thinking about keeping this too-hefty new HP laptop as my home machine, and adding the eee PC 900 as my traveler for those treatment trips to NYC.

BTW, the Linux OS is just as easy to use as a Mac...and Mac OS X is actually a shell over Unix. It also comes in a Win XP version, and the Linux version with larger storage comes with the instructions and drivers to convert it to a Win XP version if that's the OS you prefer.

It will play CDs/DVDs with the addition of a USB multi-drive, or you can download the music or movie to your extra storage (a usb hard disk or flash drive.)

You can also get them from CDW, CompUSA, TigerDirect and NewEgg .com retailers.
