Butyl putty tape has a proven track record. A strip of AL bar on top keeps the hinge from rippling.

OOPS! 3 min apart on the posts.

I use Butyl putty 'cause I usually have to take mine apart twice ;) ;)

Sounds like a plan.
I'll be moving back to your neck of the woods if I ever get my house sold here.
Was kind of looking at the banks county area, seems to be more tax friendly.
Lived in Dawsonville from 86 through 98.

Thanks for the tips guys.

Hey Mark,

Welcome back to North Georgia. Less see, Banks county, That's over around Commerce and Homer if my memory serves me right. I've lived in Gainsville and Jefferson just south of you there.

Had a first cousin grew up in Boise. Visited him once when I was 16 -- stunning country there around the Snake River.

Wow thanks for all the great feedback.

Butyl Putty tape is a new one for me, sounds like a good idea - where do I come across this, is it a standard hardware store item?

I have the harsh-environment hinge from McMaster-Carr part number 1588A73 to qoute their web site:
"
Made of tough polyolefin plastic, these hinges resist saltwater, oil, most chemicals (including solvents), temperature extremes, and damaging UV rays. All of the hinges have rigid leaves and a flexible webbed middle instead of a pin. The pinless design results in smooth, silent operation. There are no mounting holes—surface mount hinges using adhesive, screws, nails, or other fasteners. Can be cut with a box cutter or razor. For indoor and outdoor use. From the folded position, the range of motion is 360° . Temperature range is -40° to +180° F.
"
I guess one solution is to make it so it is easy to replace in case something gives.

Why not just use an aluminum hatch hinge and not worry about it? I dont understand the benifit of the plastic hinge, is it cheaper or is there some other reason to use it?
Thanks, Aaron

Yeah, what Steve Said plus it just simply CAN't EVER leak --no way. Therefore seals out any cold air. etc. etc.
