Undercoating

I see most everyone uses roofing tar for the underside of the floor. Has anyone used the spray undercoating, pro's, cons?

... a partner of mine used it...it looked like it did a fine job...however, he later(1yr) decided to change axles and when he pulled the frame loose, the undercoating came off with it...even though it was dry when he put the body on the frame, it stuck better to the frame than it did to the wood...the wood looked unaffected by the enviorment...take that for what it's worth..he used a spray undercoat he bought from NAPA...don't know the actual brand name...I usually coat with urethane or epoxy but have been considering the "asphalt fence post" paint.......

The asphalt based fence post paint is supposed to work on both metal and wood.

I am planning to use sheets of Grace Bituthene. It is a sticky, rubbery substance used in coating foundation walls in home construction. I'll let you know how it goes. I hope to get it done today.

I used spray automotice undercoating in aerosol cans. A few cans did a good job. After three years, so far so good. It seems lighter than asphalt, too

I used the spray stuff. Killed more than a few brain cells in that process, I'm sure. There are some really great warnings on the can!
I think it took me 3 cans to cover my 5' x 8'.
We're not on the road yet, so can't tell you how its holding up.

Has anyone used a spray in bed liner for their undercoating? There is one I found called "Speedliner" that touts that it can be applied to metal, wood, or concrete. It also has a Kevlar additive.

I get a lot of flack for this but I wouldn't. I have built two trailers in the past. One got undercoated and one didn't. On the one that got undercoated, the plywood floor rotted out in about 6 years. The other one, the one without the undercoating is still going strong after 15 years. Now these are not camping trailers, but based on personal results, I wouldn't recommend the undercoating. Buy good plywood and let it breath. No trapped moisture, no rot. Just one man's opinion and I'm sure I am in the minority. Such is life. Peace.

My thoughts exactly

I'll admit I really didn't undercoat, I was thinking the same thing back when I started. I've thought about lifting it and undercoating it just haven't got to it yet.
I've got 2 years and over 2,000 miles on it with no problems yet.


So I guess we'll be in the minority together.
I wonder if others have bypassed the undercoating?

A long time local RV dealer suggest that I use the mesh like material

almost all of the RV use to protect the bottom of their RVs. He is like the

Fred Sandford of RV dealers and keeps a bunch of used RV parts along

with most new parts. I am planning on buying a used piece of this

material that he claims will allow the floor to breathe while protecting from

damage. So far his advice has been backed up by my brother and others

in the RV industry. He has years of experience with conversions and

building horse trailers, etc. as well as campers.

I just bought roofing cement today, hope to under coat my floor before putting it on then maybe another coat after its on, what do you think? I saw some one used roofing cement on here.

That's what Yoder Toter used on the Silver Shadow we owned. Seemed to work okay.
