Noob from Boise ID

Hello
My name is Michael and I’m from Boise ID. Any one else from the Boise area that has or is in the process of building a TD? I would love to come look at them and discuss build issues.

What is it with Tear Drop trailers that are so darn appealing? I stumbled across them just last week and within one night of abusing my work internet I had decided to build one. I’ve been reading through the forums and looking at everyone’s builds. I like what I am seeing. I think I will plan on the BenRoy style of TD.

The only real problem I have is that my wife is not convinced at all about the Idea of a TD. When I brought up the idea to her she said she wanted all the amenities of a larger unit (kitchen, bathroom, shower, dinning area etc.) and I jokingly added “room service” to which the answer was ya that too! We have 2 kids one is 18 and off to college so probably not much interested in camping with mom and dad and the other is a 13 year old boy who love to camp. Most of the time it will be just me and my son camping, sometimes with some of his friends. But a couple times a year we all go as a family. My wife’s comment was who get to be eaten by the bear? Up until now we have always just tent camped which is a lot of work, and the cost of most RV’s or pop up tents is too steep for our budget.

So after that ramble the question is did anyone have resistance at the idea of a TD and how was it overcome?

Also I downloaded the Generic BenRoy plans and think I can muddle through with help from the boards. What are your thoughts on the Kuffle Creek plans and would they make my life easier during the build? Would the $60 be better spent on supplies or will I spend more is mistakes?

Already got the name picked out for my TD. “Galileo” NCC 1701/7

Welcome to the forum! I am a first time builder too. I just finished the Generic Benroy and while not being easy, it wasn't that difficult. When I ran into a problem I came to the forum and either looked it up or asked for help. The people here are awesome!

I can't help you with convincing your wife that this is a good idea. My yellow lab had no problem with me building mine. All I can suggest is find a gathering nearby and have her look at someone elses Teardrop.

Hello

I know that you can find a few from Idaho. (There is even a few on the TearJerker and Camp-Cook forums as well). 8)

My wife was a little hesitant at first. I slowly eased her into the idea. I kept looking for about six months and then I started showing her the trailers that I liked. She was still unsure until I got her in front of one or two and she could see how big one really was and how much easier camping could be. My wife got more involved after that and started expressing what she wanted in a teardrop trailer.

If she is still hesitant after showing her a couple then address it as a father and son building project. This could be a last project for your oldest and a good project for your youngest. Good luck.

Image to the playground Michael and family. My husband wasn't sure about the TD either so ours is bigger. Besides the cheap trailer helped. You just need to get in one is all I can say for convincing people. With a potty room and tent for the boys you wife might be more than comfortable. (room service would be nice though)

They also make a great place to escape and read a book. 8)

Howdy

I am over here in Rupert. I built mine last year. Well got it campable last year and still making pretty. I didn't really use any plans. And I had never been close to a TD untill I built mine. Should have had one at least 10 years ago. If you are over this way and we can connect, more than welcome to look at mine and talk trailers. I was coming back from the Owyhee's last month and got a big wave from a passing car. Had it at a Family reunion last week and spent hours giving tours.

Hello everyone :)

Well this web site has taken care of any lingering doubts my wife had about the TD.

After looking through the Hall of Fame and the build pics the other night she admitted that they look very nice and would suit our purposes very well. So good job everyone and thanks.

With her blessing I should be able to start as soon as I finish up some other projects I have started and not exactly worked on since summer camping and vacation time has arrived (poker table  )

So thanks again.

Hello, Michael!

I think there are several things about teardrops that are very appealing:
1. You can build it yourself. Some choose not to, but everyone considers it.
2. You can express your own latent (or not) personality.
3. You can store it in your own back or side yard.
4. You will attract a LOT of attention.
5. Beats the blazes out of a tent.
6. You get a taste of subsistance living without getting too dirty.
and on and on.

My beloved was not that excited about a teardrop in the beginning either. We have always tent-camped. It was the galley that sold her. Make sure she helps with the design, even if it is only saying she likes "option A" better than "option B".

God Bless!
